Sullivan examines the historical role of professionals in American society, pointing out that the professions have been affected and changed by new work patterns. He argues that, given increasing global interdependence coupled with emerging information technology, professionals in the public and private sector must re-examine their responsibility to larger society. Reinventing professionalism as a civic art is a central theme of the book. Thus, integrity in professional work includes the social dimensions of caring for people and purposes and making commitments to the social good. Sullivan is a professor at LaSalle University and has previously coauthored thoughtful works such as The Good Society (1991), which analyzes our social institutions, and Habits of the Heart (1985), which considers individualism and commitment. Important Content!

I bought this book to fulfill a college course reading requirement. I found it a little difficult to read and get through. This is disappointing since the content is of extreme interest to me. I am still reading it because I want to read the entire book but I believe the issue lies in the way it's been written. The author makes some great points! I feel it could use simpler verbiage and better editing.

Very wordy. Hard to follow. Felt like he was intentionally talking over our heads. Too idealistic.

I continually felt that Sullivan was trying to make a case for expanding the scope of pedagogy at the graduate and post graduate level. Liberal arts programs at the undergraduate level are a fine thing but not when they are designed to train individuals who attend these colleges for the sole purpose of exploring a range of subjects - to think like him - it starts to feel more like subterranean indoctrination. I think this is what's killing liberal arts programs. To turn society around we need to facilitate autonomy through offering students the material and letting them think for themselves. Much of Sullivan's thesis seems to be based on the philosophy of John Dewey who was a devout christian and who believed that it was the teachers role to dispense morality and virtue. He nimbly bypasses William James, father of modern pragmatism and I had to wonder if it was because James was not the "good student" that Dewey was. James was more of a renegade; like Paraselsus.
