Larry King does how-to--in this case, how to make conversation. Unfortunately, he fails to tell us much of anything new about the intricacies of the lively art. Instead, he offers mostly old saws (look listeners right in the eye, don't monopolize the conversation), and some of his advice is downright laughable. Larry sez: When you strike up a conversation with the opposite sex, avoid openers like, What's a nice girl like you doing in a place like this? "Lines like this don't work anymore." Oh, duh, Larry. There's another unintentionally hysterical section in which he counsels readers on how to talk to celebrities ("Ask Woody Allen about the New York Knicks basketball team, or Paul Newman about his charity work with kids"). Say, what a good idea. Next time I'm having dinner at Elaine's, I'll waltz right over and ask Woody about Patrick Ewing's health, though I'd rather know what the heck he sees in Soon-Yi. More interesting than King's advice are his recollections of broadcasts where the conversation was either terrific or turgid and his take on the good and bad guests he's had on his shows (Bob Kennedy, good; Bob Hope, bad; Bob Mitchum, very bad). Despite this largely silly book's numerous flaws, King's name will create demand, and, who knows, there may be patrons out there who want to know what to say at a funeral. Ilene Cooper

The Secrets of Good Communication

This is a well-written, entertaining book, interspersed with anecdotes. It does have some great suggestions, but for the most part, it serves as a reminder of the stuff you kind of know in the back of your mind, but don't always put into practice. I'm fairly young, so some of his illustrations were a little difficult for me to put into a complete context, having probably been about 5 when some of them occured, although most of them were easy to follow, even without a complete knowledge of the background. There is some useful information on good public speaking, etc. To be totally honest, I might have been, in my heart of hearts, looking for a magic book to turn me into an overnight, confident powerhouse - if anyone finds that book, I want to know about it! However, Larry King is a charming, down-to-earth man, and this is overall, a good, useful read.

not particularly insightful....

This book provides some good tips, but they are not particularly insightful. Larry King treats his readers as extremely shy ppl or those who cannot even strike a conversation with a stranger. I think anyeone with average social skills would already know most of the things mentioned in his book.
On the other hand, I highly recommend Dale Carnegie's how to win friends and influence ppl. Definitely more insightful.

A Reminder

This book is a good time killer. You don't have to read it straight on through because there are different sections to it. It took me about 3 weeks to read this book.
In 'How to Talk to Anyone, Anytime, Anywhere, author, Larry King, tells us his secrets to good communication. Although he does share some good advice, it's mostly what we already know. Some of the things he talks about, such as: body language, eye contact, listening,etc., is something we are already aware of; we just forget to use them.
This book didn't so much as provide me with a lot of new information, but it reminded me of the important things i have forgotten. Not only that, it gave me confidence to improve in areas I know that I am not good at.
