This is a book I recommend to anyone and everyone

Andy Andrews has hit yet another home run with his book "The Little Things". If you have read Andy's books in the past, or listened to his podcasts or any of his other works, it's no secret his style is one of transparency and personal connection to his audience. In "The Little Things" Andy has taken this style to a whole different level. In reading this book it was if Andy was talking to me personally. In fact he even explains as much in his Author's note, yet it's one thing for the Author to tell you this and a whole other thing to experience it. There are many personal stories, and even a contribution from his wife Polly along with a couple of other surprises. On page 119 Andy gives you the option to skip what he calls a "rabbit hole", I highly suggest you ignore that option; trust me on this one, this is a rabbit hole worth following. Each chapter has a principle so profound, yet so simple it has likely eluded your attention. Andy does a masterful job not only bringing your attention to these principles but also provides a story to assist in making it relatable to YOUR LIFE. I read through this from front to back, I won't say quickly as I had to reread many sentences and paragraphs to fully comprehend the message Andy was delivering, but quicker than normal because I couldn't wait to turn the page. I will re-read the book with highlighter and note pad handy as there were many times my mind conjured up memories from my past and struggles I am currently experiencing where I could put these principles in action. This is a book I recommend to anyone and everyone, but especially if you are a parent, a leader in business, an entrepreneur, or if you simply have a desire to gain an edge in this crazy thing we call life.

Andy Andrews just released his new book The Little Things. It arrived at my house on Friday evening, I finally decided to get some sleep and then finished it Saturday morning. Every “little thing” Andy discusses is significant in business, will improve relationships and is extremely relevant in our world today. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to grow and am certain you will gain a different perspective that will set you apart and ensure continued success.

I have read most if not all the books Andy Andrews has written so far and his latest does not disappoint. As always his books make you see things, often normal commonly accepted things, like peeling a banana with a new perspective. The definitive guide for 3D math

As a word of warning, do not purchase this book expecting it to teach you math fundamentals. If you do not have a background of at least algebra and trigonometry (and preferably a bit of calculus), you owe it to yourself to pick up another book and brush up on these fundamentals. While there are a few appendices covering a handful of topics, they are less about explaining the topic and more of reference pages.

Mathematics for 3D Game Programming and Computer Graphics is an excellent reference book for anyone doing 3D work. The topics are very to the point and few pages are wasted explaining basic math principles (hence the warning about having a decent math background). The book probably won't teach anyone who doesn't know they underlying principles but will be your go-to reference for any algorithm you implement.

The book starts with the reviews of the requisite vector, matrix, transformation (including rotations by quaternions) and basic geometry for a view frustum, but quickly dives into more advanced topics. Ray tracing is covered for all areas of use, from light maps to reflections. The lighting chapter covers texturing using several map types as well as lighting models with a very enjoyable discussion of specular reflection models.

Solid chapters on culling using bounding volumes and portal systems, shadowing and curve algorithms round out the first half of the book. The second half is devoted to the mathematics of physics, with chapters on basic collision detection, linear and rotational physics. The simulation of fluids and cloth (one of the more difficult physical models to accurately compute in a game) gets it's own chapter and it's a highlight for anyone implementing character clothing animation or a realistic water volume.

Every chapter has exercises (with and appendix of answers) to reinforce the material. The C++ and GLSL shader code is available on the books companion website ([...]) much of which forms the basis for the math classes of the authors own engine.

Anyone who needs a math reference book for 3D would do well to own this book. If you are writing your own engine, you owe it to yourself to pick up what will be the only math book you will need. While many technical books do not age well, this hardcover book will last through many late-night coding sessions both physically and with regard to the material within at a low price point. Never again will you have to scour through your old textbooks or search online for the algorithm you are trying to implement. The author has done the impossible; make a truly terrific math textbook.

Essential reference for any 3D graphics work.

Finally, no more searching through all my college math textbooks for the reference I need for real-time 3D software development. The basics of vectors and matrices are of course included, but in much more depth than you got in school, more than likely - and with emphasis on how they are useful in 3D game programming. So many game developers lack an intuitive feel for such basics as transformation matrices, dot products, and cross products and are hobbled by this; just read up to chapter three and the lights will go on, so to speak. The chapter on lighting is particularly, well, enlightening - not only are the various lighting models explained in detail (including some I was unfamiliar with before), but the author provides means for accomplishing them in real-time using texture and vertex shaders.
The notation used in the book is modern and consistent, and the code samples clearly written. I believe this is the first volume to combine complete mathematical explanations of essential 3D computer graphics operations with practical advice on how to implement the sometimes complex math efficiently in real-time systems.
The chapters on picking and collision detection are also complete and include practical advice on implementation in addition to the theory behind it.
This is not a book for most high school math students - the author assumes you've at least been through some higher level math and can talk the basic language of mathematics. However, it does not presuppose that you are familiar with anything but basic calculus, and more importantly, it doesn't assume that you're familiar with some quirky notational system specific to the author. I haven't been in a math class for ten years, but I had no trouble understanding any concepts introduced in this book upon the first read.
I don't forsee this volume leaving my desk anytime soon!

Math majors rejoice

To be honest, while I find this book to be a decent reference, I find it to be pretty inaccessible in terms of sitting down and reading through it in an attempt to learn the concepts. As a non-math major (I'm actually an engineer and software developer) these math concepts are by no means beyond me. But rather than simply being presented with equation after equation, proof after proof, what I find a lot more valuable is more discussion on the usage of these equations. Specifically I'd like to see examples, diagrams, and code, and there is precious little of any of that in this book.

In other words, this book is very much like what you expect to find in a very dry upper devision college math text for the consumption of math majors who are used to such things. But for a non math major just trying to make use of these concepts in order to get the job done and make games? eh, not so much.

Still, I do think this book is useful as a reference when I want to look up an equation as there are a ton of them crammed into this book, but for me, I just don't find this book to be very good as a learning tool.

Disappointing

I am an avid Radclyffe fan. I have all of her books and a collection of over 400 lesbian novels. This book was very disappointing because it had a very weak plot, not much character development and a rushed feeling to the story. In most Radclyffe fiction she builds the characters and the storyline slowly to draw you in. This one lacked substance and I felt as if someone else wrote it. Her stories seem to be getting shorter with each book published. As I said in my title - Disappointing. I would skip this one and spend your money on another Radclyffe selection. She has so many better ones.

Not up to par

I've read all of Radclyffe's novels, and Firestorm was definitely lackluster in comparison. The plot was extremely weak, the characters not terribly well developed, and, though there was sexual tension, the sex scenes fell far short of what I've come to expect from Radclyffe. For a book entitled "Firestorm," this one didn't deliver much fire on several levels.

Disappointing

"Firestorm" is the second book in Radyclyffe's First Responder series.

30-year-old Mallory "Ice" James is the captain of a smokejumper crew and about to train a new group of rookies. A year ago, she lost two of her people in a fire and she's determined to keep control this year. Under no circumstances does she want to have even friendly feelings for another firefighter.

Her well-ordered life is interrupted when a new rookie is transferred without her knowledge.

Jac Russo is the daughter of a senator and determined to prove herself.

When they meet, there's an instant attraction, but not necessarily an instant liking of each other.

Technically, the book is well-written - good editing and the head hopping is so controlled that it's not annoying. But I didn't feel close to any of the characters. The ending felt rushed, for example, the situation with Jac's father was never resolved.

I also expected to have them fight a fire and Mallory overcoming her self-doubts after losing two of her men - but it didn't happen.

If you have never read one of Radclyffe's books before, I suggest you read "Safe Harbor" or "Turn Back Time," not "Firestorm."

The Bible indicates that shortly after Jesus' birth, King Herod, threatened by the adulation the baby was receiving, ordered the slaughter of male children under the age of two in and around Bethlehem. Warned of this in advance, Joseph and Mary fled to Egypt with Jesus, returning to Palestine only after Herod's death. That's all most Westerners know about Jesus' early childhood, mainly because many Christians tend to reject extra-biblical stories about Jesus, and Westerners in general often deny stories of ancient events that cannot be verified by archeology or science. Ever conscious of that, Arizona author Perry, a self-described "doubting Thomas" who grew up in a faith-rich environment, set out to discover more about Jesus' childhood by following a loosely structured itinerary based on the route the family is believed to have taken. Perry's experiences along the way would by themselves be entertaining enough, but more importantly, they offer significant insight into non-Western thinking about faith, particularly within the Coptic Church in Egypt, where the faithful have no problem believing, for instance, that a baby's footprint found on a stone slab in a sewer in 1984 is that of Jesus. The paucity of biblicalinformation on the topic led Perry to the Gnostic gospels and the oraltradition of the Coptic Church. At first, as he reconstructs and thenfollows the trail, drinking water from healing wells and casting aneye on the bones of saints, it seems as if he simply believes thejourney to have been a real event, but eventually he begins to wonderwhether he is following "a complete fiction." Finally, though, he seeshimself as a believer who "let his heart be his guide," concludingthat it may not matter if the events are factual. Similarly, the mostcompelling part of his book isn't the quest itself but the stories ofthe people he meets along the way: the woman metal worker in what istruly a man's world, or the Coptic priests and monks who help him seein new ways. Bright Lights, Small Villages and the Baby Jesus

Paul Perry's Jesus in Egypt takes the reader on a tour through a mystical land of miracles and myth. Tourists and pilgrims regularly flock to Egypt's sacred sites to gaze upon remains and relics up and down the Nile, which pumps the life blood into the desert country. Perry's trek followed the controversial trail of the Holy Family's short stint in Egypt has they fled Herod's soldiers. Not the standard traveler's trip to the Giza Plateau outside of Cairo or the Valley of the Kings on the Western banks of Luxor, Perry journeyed through darkened alleys, deserted rutted roads and into the heart of the most extreme Islam fundamentals in the world. Even more interesting, Perry, an American, made this voyage not long after September 11, 2001.

Tracing the exact route of Joseph, Mary and Jesus proved problematic. Not all the canonized Gospels give an account of this journey, and Matthew's version is short and vague at best. Even Coptic monks within Egypt can't agree on the authenticity of many of the sites that proclaim to have provided shelter for the family or experienced a miracle performed by the baby Jesus while passing through. Moreover, not much in the way of tangible evidence exists that would even begin to sway the opinion of a western archeologist.

Perry's voyage relies on roughly two thousand years of oral tradition, divine visions, two or three lines from the book of Isaiah and accounts from apocryphal books. Remote villages claim celebrity status related to the handy work of the divine infant such as creating water wells, various healings and toppling pharonic monuments. Slim empirical evidence exists, but a handprint, visions, light spray sightings, remains of the first icon of the Virgin Mary and a stone slab in the so-called world's first Christian church are all parts of this mosaic.

It remains unclear exactly where Jesus and his parents visited on their refuge into Egypt, if they ever entered the country at all. Believer or not, this book reads like a hybrid of a personal spiritual journal, travel guide and Holy Family Trail map, making it a priceless resource for those who seek to follow in the footsteps of Jesus.

This is a Great Book

I really enjoyed this book, Christianity was alive and well for 400 years from 1 AD. Then the Roman Emperor decided that Christianity should be the official religion of Rome, So after feeding christians to the lions, "now I'll accept their religion", But we can't profit from what they believe, so a counsil of bishops, threw out this, modified that, and the emperor was presented with the new cannonized version of the Holy Bible, in about 395 AD. Ok, we got our Bible, so what do we do with all these people who arn't going to accept it as the word of God, since they had their teachings going back 400 years. Well to suppress any opposition to our new bible we will just kill them. And kill them he did, all the way up till the 19th century. But some of them in spite of the opposition hung on to their beliefs, Coptics in Egypt as one, but recent findings are rediscovering what these bishops thought were suppressed. They are being translated and so that now we can read what these bishops didn't want us to know! I really enjoy these authors who have the guts to run with this information, It's about time to come out of the dark ages of Christianity, and enjoy what was hidden for so long, I could shoot off a list of books, but anybody who as came into the light can name them for themselves. Thank You. , and I used to think James Mitchner, and Ernest Hemmingway were exciting !!!

Joseph Zbukvic began painting professionally in 1979 and is regarded as one of Australia's best watercolor artists. His work is represented in many private and public collections and has been exhibited in leading galleries across Australia as well as in London, England. Stunning effects by manipulating the amount of moisture

The example paintings in Joseph Zbukvic's "Mastering Atmosphere and Mood" are stunning. By manipulating the amount of moisture ON the paper and IN the wash of paint, Zbuvic creates strong contrast between ethereal washes and densely painting architectural or landscape elements.
Zbuvic uses a device he calls a clock, which consists of a circle divided into wedges; the left side gauging the amount of water on the paper (from shiny wet to bone dry) and the right side gauging the amount of water mixed into the paint, from weak "tea" to "butter" or thick paint. This is rather original, but it does communicate an awareness of the moisture levels in both paint and paper to the artist. One example painting that really stands out is a rainy scene of downtown Melbourne, Australia. The street is lightly washed to allow the paper beneath to create the white shine of a wet street; the buildings and headlight reflections are painted more densely to provide either solidity (the building) or glow (the headlights.)
Most books on watercolor demonstrate a layered method of washes followed by glazes (paint over paint.) The end result can often be muddy for beginners in watercolor. This method is quite different in how it describes laying down washes and glazes, and can help the watercolorist achieve transparent atmosphere effects by paying attention to the water. If you've run into a brick wall with your current method of painting, this might be a great book to give a boost to your technique.

Beautiful book but not for beginners

One of the most amazing things about this book besides it gorgeous illustrations is that it is not another cotton candy, trick laden, watercolor book by a workshop star.
The artist and the paintings are deep, challenging and beautifull though I am not thrilled by some color choices I am by the integrity and depth this fellow brings to a medium that can all too often be made into wall paper designs.
His work is not easily apporached or copied and that is refreshing and daunting at the same time. He says it best when he warns that skill can only come from work and not from tricks. It was an eye opener reading about the effects of dampness and the state of the pigments themselves.
I will be humbly working in his shadow for a loooooong while and loving evry moment.

Can't recommend for the price

Joseph Zbukvic is a talented artist and the works in the book are terrific. But you won't learn much from this book. His watercolor clock idea is perhaps a nice teaching aid but the basic idea- about using paper mositure and brush loading to good effect- is nothing you won't learn from very fundamental watercolor technique and just experimenting on your own. Having looked at Zbukvic's website and a video, I will say that he has one great hint: connect your shapes, and this is done using lost and found edges (let edges of some shapes be indistinct so shapes are connected). He also emphasizes values, but this is basic technique and no revelation.

I don't see the book as nearly worth the money (at more than $50). Alvaro Castagnet paints almost exactly like Zbukvic; I can barely tell them apart. Although Castagnet's book is nearly non-informative, get it for the images (at much less cost). I would also recommend one of Zbukvic's DVDs ([...]) as less expensive and probably overall more informative. For context, look at the Amercian Watercolor Society website and see the artists' links and the great variety of terrific watercolors, many of them polar opposites of Zbukvic in technique. Charles Reid has good basic instruction.

About the Author

THEODORE L. BROWN received his Ph.D. from Michigan State University in 1956. Since then, he has been a member of the faculty of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where he is now Professor of Chemistry, Emeritus. He served as Vice Chancellor for Research, and Dean, The Graduate College, from 1980 to 1986, and as Founding Director of the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology from 1987 to 1993. Professor Brown has been an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Research Fellow and has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship. In 1972 he was awarded the American Chemical Society Award for Research in Inorganic Chemistry, and received the American Chemical Society Award for Distinguished Service in the Advancement of Inorganic Chemistry in 1993. He has been elected a Fellow of both the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Chemical Society.

H. EUGENE LEMAY, JR., received his B.S. degree in Chemistry from Pacific Lutheran University (Washington) and his Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1966 from the University of Illinois (Urbana). He then joined the faculty of the University of Nevada, Reno, where he is currently Professor of Chemistry, Emeritus. He has enjoyed Visiting Professorships at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, at the University College of Wales in Great Britain, and at the University of California, Los Angeles. Professor LeMay is a popular and effective teacher, who has taught thousands of students during more than 40 years of university teaching. Known for the clarity of his lectures and his sense of humor, he has received several teaching awards, including the University Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award (1991) and the first Regents’ Teaching Award given by the State of Nevada Board of Regents (1997).

BRUCE E. BURSTEN received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin in 1978. After two years as a National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow at Texas A&M University, he joined the faculty of The Ohio State University, where he rose to the rank of Distinguished University Professor. In 2005, he moved to his present position at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville as Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Professor Bursten has been a Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation Teacher-Scholar and an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Research Fellow, and he is a Fellow of both the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Chemical Society. At Ohio State he has received the University Distinguished Teaching Award in 1982 and 1996, the Arts and Sciences Student Council Outstanding Teaching Award in 1984, and the University Distinguished Scholar Award in 1990. He received the Spiers Memorial Prize and Medal of the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2003, and the Morley Medal of the Cleveland Section of the American Chemical Society in 2005. He was President of the American Chemical Society for 2008. In addition to his teaching and service activities, Professor Bursten's research program focuses on compounds of the transition-metal and actinide elements.

CATHERINE J. MURPHY received two B.S. degrees, one in Chemistry and one in Biochemistry, from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, in 1986. She received her Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin in 1990. She was a National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health Postdoctoral Fellow at the California Institute of Technology from 1990 to 1993. In 1993, she joined the faculty of the University of South Carolina, Columbia, becoming the Guy F. Lipscomb Professor of Chemistry in 2003. In 2009 she moved to the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, as the Peter C. and Gretchen Miller Markunas Professor of Chemistry. Professor Murphy has been honored for both research and teaching as a Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar, an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Research Fellow, a Cottrell Scholar of the Research Corporation, a National Science Foundation CAREER Award winner, and a subsequent NSF Award for Special Creativity. She has also received a USC Mortar Board Excellence in Teaching Award, the USC Golden Key Faculty Award for Creative Integration of Research and Undergraduate Teaching, the USC Michael J. Mungo Undergraduate Teaching Award, and the USC Outstanding Undergraduate Research Mentor Award. Since 2006, Professor Murphy has served as a Senior Editor for the Journal of Physical Chemistry. In 2008 she was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Professor Murphy’s research program focuses on the synthesis and optical properties of inorganic nanomaterials, and on the local structure and dynamics of the DNA double helix.

PATRICK M. WOODWARD received B.S. degrees in both Chemistry and Engineering from Idaho State University in 1991. He received a M.S. degree in Materials Science and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Oregon State University in 1996. He spent two years as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Physics at Brookhaven National Laboratory. In 1998, he joined the faculty of the Chemistry Department at The Ohio State University where he currently holds the rank of Professor. He has enjoyed visiting professorships at the University of Bordeaux, in France, and the University of Sydney, in Australia. Professor Woodward has been an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Research Fellow and a National Science Foundation CAREER Award winner. He currently serves as an Associate Editor to the Journal of Solid State Chemistry and as the director of the Ohio REEL program, an NSF-funded center that works to bring authentic research experiments into the laboratories of first- and second-year chemistry classes in 15 colleges and universities across the state of Ohio. Professor Woodward’s research program focuses on understanding the links between bonding, structure and properties of solid state inorganic functional materials.

MATTHEW W. STOLTZFUS received his B.S. degree in Chemistry from Millersville University in 2002 and his Ph. D. in Chemistry in 2007 from The Ohio State University. He spent two years as a teaching postdoctoral assistant for the Ohio REEL program, an NSF-funded center that works to bring authentic research experiments into the general chemistry lab curriculum in 15 colleges and universities across the state of Ohio. In 2009, he joined the faculty of Ohio State where he currently holds the position of Chemistry Lecturer. In addition to lecturing general chemistry, Stoltzfus accepted the Faculty Fellow position for the Digital First Initiative, inspiring instructors to offer engaging digital learning content to students through emerging technology. Through this initiative, he developed an iTunes U general chemistry course, which has attracted over 120,000 students from all over the world. Stoltzfus has received several teaching awards, including the inaugural Ohio State University 2013 Provost's Award for Distinguished Teaching by a Lecturer and he is recognized as an Apple Distinguished Educator.�

IF YOU NEED THE 12 EDITION BUY THE 11TH!!!!

I transferred schools and I needed Chemistry: The Central Science for Chem II. The class listed that I needed the 12th edition but they also gave us Mastering Chemistry for free so I figured would just use the E-Book. It turned out to be a pain so about five weeks into the semester I decided I needed a hard copy of the book and decided to check the difference between editions. These are literally the same book with exception to Ch. 22 & 23 in 11E and Ch. 23 in the 12E. Most of Ch.23 in 12E is Ch. 23 with parts of Ch. 22 in 11E, you just have to know where you are supposed to be. Also Ch.25 in 11E is Ch.24 in 12E.

Even all of the end of chapter exercises are the same in 11E as 12E just numbered differently and some in different order, but all within the same section. There are some that vary slightly, usually just values, but I'd say 97% are the same. Not all of the sample questions are identical either throughout the chapter but most are.

This is a great chemistry book, it is very easy to read and understand and if you put in the work you will see results. Buy the Student's Guide and Solutions To Exercises (all exercises) and you will have no problems with this course.

LASTLY: BUY 11e OVER 12e!!!!!! I paid just under $40 TOTAL (including shipping) for the 11e text, Student's Guide, and Solutions To Exercises (all exercises). These books would run me almost $500 at the university bookstore and probably $300 by looking around online.

The Authoritative Gen Chem Book

I teach general chemistry as both a private tutor and as a free tutor at Purdue University. In my time, I've seen every general chemistry book known to man come across the table. Without fail, though, BLB is my reference text. Like many gen chem books it has excellent diagrams, but in addition the text is lucid, organized, well written and makes no pedagogical leaps that the reader must figure out on their own. It is easy to read and easy to understand and the material is presented in a fairly logical order (I have minor quibbles with some of it). I forsee this book becoming a classic in the future.
