From School Library Journal
Gr 5–8—This sequel to Keeper of the Lost Cities (S & S, 2012) continues the story of Sophie Foster, the girl who was brought up as human but who is really an elf with engineered DNA, which has conferred enormous power on her. She now lives with the elves in Havenfield, and has been adopted by a couple whose daughter died. Sophie tries to integrate into the elf community and be a regular kid at school. Her powers of telepathy and psychic healing, however, set her firmly apart as she helps to capture and train a unique alicorn (one with wings). As the mystery of the Black Swan group and their true allegiance continues, Sophie tries to help heal the broken minds of certain elves crucial to uncovering the secret. Clearly the middle book in a series, this title works best for readers familiar with the first book. There is plenty of action, but the story of Sophie's origins, the Black Swan and their role, and the struggle to save the world of the elves does not progress significantly. This installment lacks the sense of urgency and emotional connection of the first title.—Sue Giffard, Ethical Culture Fieldston School, New York City

From Booklist
Sophie Foster returns in Messenger’s strong sequel to Keeper of the Lost Cities (2012), about a 12-year-old girl who discovers she is able to read minds, a result of her elven heritage. Now living at Havenfield in the Lost Cities, surrounded by her elven guardians and friends and still facing a big learning curve about her new life as an elf, Sophie makes an unprecedented find when she stumbles upon Silveny, the only female alicorn in existence. This new twist carries the story along new paths that are refreshingly clear of the usual doom and gloom accompanying middle books in series, although there are ominous contacts from the furtive Black Swan group. Although her second year at Foxfire Academy figures in, the plot spends more time on Sophie’s after-school activities and her relationships with friends—Keefe in particular—and family. A satisfying follow-up for series fans that sets up anticipation for the next book. Grades 4-7. --Julie Trevelyan

A Fun, Creative, and Simply Outstanding Sequel
By YA Book Queen
Sophie Foster is back, and in EXILE she's in for a world of trouble and excitement. From training a rare alicorn (essentially, a very endearing winged unicorn) to trying not to fail her classes at Foxfire, Sophie's life becomes exceedingly complicated when the mysterious Black Swan group continues to send her obscure messages. As if that's not bad enough, Sophie's become even more of a strange outcast in her society -- especially since she now has a goblin bodyguard to keep her safe -- and her elfish abilities are starting to have some problems. In order to save herself - and the people she cares about - Sophie has to travel into unknown territory, and decide who she can trust to help her succeed...

Once again, Messenger gives elves and other creatures of myth her own twist in this captivating sequel. Dangerous, thrilling, and incredibly surprising, EXILE is an outstanding sequel that will keep readers glued to the pages. I told myself I would only read a few chapters one night, and somehow found myself up at midnight, still reading. The characters I fell in love with in the first novel are given more page-time in this sequel, and Sophie's adventures take a darker, more emotional turn. While I highly enjoyed KEEPER OF THE LOST CITIES, Messenger surprised me with how incredible EXILE turned out to be. If you are looking for a fun and creative middle-grade series that is filled with surprises and fabulous characters, then you need to check out these books.

HIGHLIGHTS: I love how important family and friendship is in this series. While Sophie relies heavily on herself, she also leans on her friends (especially Dex and Keefe) and family (the fabulous Grady and Edaline) when she needs some extra support. I even enjoyed Sophie's struggles with her abilities in this novel, and how she never let that hold her back. The new details Messenger included about Sophie's fascinating world were fantastic. While reading, I never knew what to expect from this story, so I was very surprised by certain moments.

LOWLIGHTS: I didn't make note of any lowlights while reading, so I think it's safe to say that I highly enjoyed this entire story. I was a bit bothered by Fitz's moody attitude, but I understand why he acted the way he did.

SOURCE: received an advanced readers copy from publicist in exchange for my honest opinion. I will be purchasing this book ASAP, because this is one that I definitely want on my bookshelf.

Absolutely Awesome!

I didn't think the author could possibly out-do her first book in the series, but, she did. To say I'm impressed would be an understatement.
Sophie and her friends are starting another year at school, but, that isn't as much a part of the story this time. A certain amount of the action takes place at school, (and this is a very action packed story), but much of it happens elsewhere.
I loved Keefe being a much more involved character, as he is one of my favorites, and the Alicorn was so much fun!
We get to know many characters much better, and while the story has more twists than the silver tower...some big questions are answered.
It's a nice touch that although Sophie is incredibly strong, and gifted, she is not perfect; and her friends care deeply about her in spite of, (or, maybe because of), that.
I don't want to give away any spoilers, so, I will just say; if you love good fantasy stories, you will enjoy this series; even if you aren't a "tween", anymore!

Even a heroine has flaws.
By Kindle Customer
While looking for some literature I could share with my rapidly growing grandchildren, I took a chance on this series. I am now up way past my bedtime writing this review. It is the very human emotions and behavior of Sophie, the heroine elf, that keeps this fantasy real. Ms. Messenger is a storyteller and she is skilled at creating chapter by chapter "cliffhangers" that leave readers sure they can give up just a "few more minutes" of sleep time.

Our heroine is not without her side kick hero friends making this a book to be
equally enjoyed by both sexes. It is an intriguing story - full of believable characters, constantly moving plots and the angst of fitting in, making choices, and growing up. The clean language and healthy relationships portrayed are icing on the cake! Read, and share with the grandkids! Ages 9-10 to adult.
