Troubleshooting the Charging System

Many, certainly the majority of us, are more than likely going to ride our motorcycles for a very long time without ever experiencing a catastrophic charging-system failure. Of course, that doesn’t mean we won’t run into the occasional dead battery or other charging system glitch. In most cases, some simple troubleshooting procedures and a little common sense will have you back in the saddle ASAP. Lots of charging system faults can be traced to either poor maintenance or bad electrical connections, including broken wires and bad grounds.

Frequently, the first sign of charging-circuit problems is hard starting. The bike may turn over slowly or not at all. Your first inclination may be to simply replace the battery at this point and hope for the best—don’t. First, check the charging voltage using a voltmeter. If the voltage is within specifications, remove the battery, service it, and charge it. If you find something obviously wrong, for instance, a dry cell or two, or a bad battery connection, it’s more than likely you’ve found your problem. If the charge rate is low, look for corrosion at the system-component connections. All of the connections need to be in good, clean condition. If they aren’t, make them so before reconnecting the component. Coat the terminals with a dielectric silicone grease to prevent any further problems. Use your wiring diagram to locate all of the connections and their grounds. Separate each connection and thoroughly clean the terminals. Likewise, remove each ground, clean the terminal, and clean its grounding point, usually the frame. Don’t be afraid to get a little aggressive here. A small file or piece of sandpaper should be used to reach bright, shiny metal. Use your brain. If the problem cropped up just after you installed some kind of high-zoot electrical accessory, disconnect the item to see if the problem goes away. Likewise, if the problem cropped up after you removed some component or bodywork for service, you may have inadvertently left a ground wire or connection loose.

Investigate. Some alternator connections are routed perilously close to drive chains, hot exhausts, or pinch points. If the charging indicator suddenly comes on, it may be due to a broken or melted wire. A quick charging-system check for bikes not normally equipped with a charging indicator is to simply watch the headlights at night. At idle many lights will dim slightly, especially if the turn signals or brake lights are applied. As you rev the engine up, the light should become slightly brighter. This is by no means an accurate test, but it does give you some indication that the charging system is functioning. If all else fails, and your charging system does go belly up, don’t be afraid to improvise. An ignition system can run for three or four hours on battery power alone. I’ve seen all types of bodges used to get the bike home: spare batteries strapped to the luggage rack or stuck in the saddlebags are popular. Once, two friends of mine were on tour when the rectifier in one bike packed it in. The nearest replacement was about a three-hour ride away. Since both bikes used a similar-sized battery, they rode halfway, swapped batteries from the bike that wouldn’t charge to the one that did, and rode the rest of the way to the dealership, where the new rectifier was installed.

Not just Do-It-Yourself, but Understand-It-Yourself.

Well-organized, easy on the layperson's eyes but without talking down to us either. "The Essential Guide to Motorcycle Maintenance" is divided up into sections and subsections that make it both an interesting cover-to-cover read but also very easy to use as a fast reference when repairing on the fly, taking the "Teach a man to fish" over the "Give a man a fish" approach. If all you want to know is how to change a spark plug you can probably find a faster how-to online. If you want to know how to change the spark plug AND just what the spark plug is doing, why and how and what happens when it's not doing it right, this is the book you're looking for.

My '03 Kawasaki Vulcan isn't a toy, it's a tool; my only mode of transportation in this poor economy averaging 2,000 miles per month. And if I can't afford a car I certainly can't afford a conventional motorcycle mechanic looking to squeeze my wallet for what isn't there. So when my work-out-of-the-backyard mechanic isn't available or my work takes me away from him for a few months, I want to be able to do a fair amount of maintenance and repairs myself. Or at least know what I'm talking about when I do go to the conventional mechanic. Especially being female, it's still a challenge for some mechanics to see women as anything but walking, gullible, bags of money.

This book has been my first giant leap into that realm. For all the varied motorcycles and configurations out there, Zimmerman gives a solid, most-common overview. More importantly, he does a fantastic job explaining to the layperson just how the various components work. This way, when I have a weird power loss happening under specific weather conditions, I'm not just looking at a laundry list of possible suspects in my owner's manual (or the appendix of this book). I can also go back through paragraphs and sidebars about just what the engine needs, analyzing for myself what the symptom tells me the engine isn't getting, and from there, I'm better equipped to diagnose the likely problem(s) myself than just blindly "Try replacing A, B, or C."

For any biker out there, male or female, looking to be a little less dependent on your local Super Acme Made Of Money MegaMotorsports service shop, for those looking to better maintain your bike (and trust me, the key to hitting 130,000 miles is maintenance, maintenance, maintenance), and for those who want to learn in plain English just what makes your dream machine tick, "The Essential Guide to Motorcycle Maintenance" will be your new best friend!

Great book for the begginer and intermediate start their own wrenching

I've learn a lot from this book. It will not teach you how to do everything, but will always point you in the right direction.

For me, this is the perfect starting point for those who want to know more about mechanics, and it will take away any fear that you might have of doing so.

Very well written, and the author enthusiasm is very contagious. It goes well beyond the owner's manual, and it's the perfect companion for your bike's service manual.

Great reference guide to have around.

Hopefully, you will outgrown it after a while, but that only means that the book did it's job.

Great for any layman to work on his motorycle

This book isn't going to turn you into a master motorcycle mechanic. You want that, go to school for it. That said, this book is a must have if you want to do your own maintenance work on your motorcycle thus saving you money from not having to pay labor to a repair shop. Pair this book with the maintenance manual for your specific motorcycle and you're in business. The only thing I was kinda comfortable doing was changing my oil. After reading this book I've gained confidence to do so much more. I realized my belt was too tight so I was able to remove the back wheel, adjust my belt put the back wheel back on, make sure it was level, change brake pads and brake fluid, replace my front pulley, change radiator fluid, take apart the front end to install risers and re-run all the wires to the handlebars, etc. There's not much I'm not comfortable doing. I credit this book to giving me the confidence to do the work myself and save cash. Now my motorcycle is customized by me and maintained by me making it truly "my ride."

Scintillating new installment in the Outback series

Paul Freeman's previous book, Heroics, ventured into new and exciting territory and contained some of his best work. Having said that, the return to the Outback fanchise represented by the release of Bushmen is a most welcome reprise, and a superb addition to what is in my opinion the most outstanding series of photographic books anywhere.

Bushmen contains probably the most diverse collection of models in any Freeman book, and, as in previous works, they are as nature intended; muscular, hirsute and, above all, naked. Where Bushmen differs from its predecessors however is in the more sensual, languid tone, as men are captured dreamily at one with naure.In fact, Bushmen may be read as a paen to the male form in its most natural state. the The larrikinism and playful mateship of previous Outback books have been replaced with a graceful, though intensely erotic, calm. The serenely beautiful cover model entrances the reader and invites thoughtful examination of him and his countrymen. And, given that Bushmen boldly contains the most frontal nudity in any Freeman work, such an invitation does not disappoint. Bushmen is also unexpectedly daring at times, and pushes the boundaries more than any other work in the Outback series.

I have read rumours that Bushmen will be the last in the Outback series. I truly hope this is not the case, as it is the most outstanding series of photographic books I have ever seen, and I no other photographer who can create such exquisite, personal images of the male nude. There remain so many stories in the Australian outback still to be unearthed, and I hope that Paul Freeman will continue to explore these. Hugely recommended.

The Finest of the Outback Series by Paul Freeman!

Making a statement such as 'the finest of the Outback Series' is like praising gold within gold. Australian photographer Paul Freeman has managed to establish himself as the epitome of artists in capturing the essence of maleness. He has published eight monographs whose focus is the male nude, and despite the fact that they are all based on models from around the same area, each book is refreshingly new in its approach,

Freeman opens his book with an 'enhanced' poem -AFTER ALL by Henry Lawson (1867 - 1922) - that sings of the bushmen of the outback region. And that sets the very sophisticated tone for this large sized book of full color, black and white and sepia toned images. The quality of composition, lighting, mood and variation in spacing the images (some are close-ups of heads while most are full figures in setting for the most part in the outdoors. In other words, technically these are some of the most perfectly executed photographs in any collection.

But on to the content. OUTBACK BUSHMEN images the most masculine, perfectly/naturally built, extraordinarily handsome and sensual men ever gathered. These men are au naturel - usually unshaven in beard, always avoiding the shaved bodies that have become so popular in other male photographic studies - these men are MEN, mostly fully nude, at times showing the mud and dirt of a day's work, figures In repose, asleep, intensely making erotic eye contact with the viewer, being playful with each other, responding to the beauty to the beauty of the Outback country - perhaps the same type of raw landscape that once graced the West in America!

It is difficult to imagine a more genuinely magnificent collection of men unfettered by current time, or distractions, or false poses. This is the beauty of Paul Freeman's work - honest, celebratory, and deeply appreciative of man in his natural state of symbiosis with Nature. This monograph is a remarkable artistic achievement by one of our most important photographic artists. Grady Harp, September 12

Probably one of the better in the series. It doesn't have the story quality of the first but the layout and presentation is better, more thought out and planned than the last two. His photography is nearly always impeccable and creative.

Excellent book on all aspects of power electronics

Power electronics is the technology associated with the efficient conversion, control and conditioning of electric power by static means from its available input form into the desired electrical output form. This conversion is performed with semiconductor switching devices such as diodes, thyristors and transistors. In contrast to electronic systems concerned with transmission and processing of signals and data, in power electronics substantial amounts of electrical energy are processed. The authors at MIT designed this text specifically to teach the subject of power electronics. Although the coverage is broad, they develop topics in sufficient depth to expose the fundamental principles, concepts, techniques, methods, and circuits necessary for the reader to understand and design power electronic systems as diverse as a 5 Watt switching converter and a 600 MWatt high-voltage DC transmission terminal. Topics include an introduction, form and function (topology), introduction to rectifier circuits, bridge and polyphase rectifier circuits, phase-controlled converters, high-frequency switching dc/dc converters, isolated high-frequency dc/dc converters, variable-frequency dc/ac converters, resonant converters, ac/ac converters, dynamics and control, state-space models, linear and piecewise linear models, feedback control design, components, review of semiconductor devices, power diodes, power transistors, thyristors, magnetic components, ancillary issues, gate and base drives, thyristor commutation circuits, snubber circuits and clamps, and thermal modeling and heat sinking. There are plenty of instructive diagrams shown throughout the book, and the only thing I can really say against it is that part two of the book entitled "Dynamics and Control" seems out of place in this book, since it really has nothing much to do with the subject of power electronics and seems to disrupt the flow of what is otherwise an excellent book. Also, it is very hard to cover the subject of dynamics and control adequately in just the four chapters allocated to the subject.

Comprehensive and lucid... this book presents all of the most important subjects in modern power electronics and electric power system control, and presents them in an organized fashion with a readable format. It also touches on many emerging concepts currently being developed in labs and universities, and is revised frequently.

It worth for you to know all the bible of Power Electronics. One said Power System bible is Stevenson's book, on the other hand, Power Electronics' bible is Kassakian too. You can find everything in this book. You will not be regret if you hit this book.

Sondheim fan? Wanna become one?

This book takes us musical-by-musical through some of the most famous and artistically valuable of Sondheim's musicals (the latest entry being Assassins). Each chapter looks at the musical with a critical eye (or listens with a critical ear, as the case may be) and responds to criticism about the musical in question. This is not a book simply about selling Sondheim - when the author is unimpressed, she lets us know. But Gordan finds much to admire in Sondheim's musicals, and helps us to appreciate that. Each chapter outlines in detail the plot, characters, and songs - especially useful for in-depth study. You can't get much more specific without actually taking out the libretto or following along in the score! All her arguments are well-founded and supported with examples from the text. The use of lyrics is especially appropriate. This book is especially valuable from a literary and theatrical standpoint. The observations on the music itself are correct, but not plentiful, as Gordan's expertise is in theatre, not music. Accessible to the casual audience member and the Sondheim groupie.

Good But Flawed Sonheim Book

The book provided a reasonably good review of the Broadway career of Stephen Sondheim. However, the author is too much of an avowed Sondheim fan, and tends to provide only a one-sided, superpositive view of Sondheim's oeuvre. His misses (e.g., Merrily We Roll Along) are glossed over. Still, for Sondheim devotees, this is a helpful book.

An Academic View of the Musicals of Sondheim

Of all the books currently published on Sondheim's musicals, Gordon gives the best academic treatment to his works. Mainly a formal analysis of the shows, she peppers in enough historical and biographical facts to provide any reader with a better understanding of the plays. The chapter on _Sunday_ is particularly good. It does help to be familiar with the shows before reading, as Gordon wastes little time on plot synopsis. A must for any Sondheim scholar.

About the Author

Erin E. O’Connor is an associate professor of history at Bridgewater State College in Massachusetts. She has over a decade of teaching experience in both private and public institutions of higher education, where she has taught a wide variety of courses on Latin American and world history. O’Connor’s research has focused on gender, ethnicity, and nation-state formation in nineteenth-century Latin America, which she explored in her first monograph, Gender, Indian, Nation: The Contradictions of Making Ecuador, 1830-1925 (Arizona, 2007). Her current research scrutinizes the multiple public implications of domesticity in Spanish America, investigating how both elite and poor individuals and families engaged with changing gender laws.

Leo J. Garofalo is an associate professor of history at Connecticut College. Since 2000, he has taught majors and non-majors in the US and South America about colonial Latin America, the African Diaspora, modern politics and revolution, and immigration and migration issues. Garofalo's research explores the making of race in colonial Andean societies and the movement of people of African descent in the early Iberian worlds embracing three continents. His most recent book explores the impact of the Diaspora on the Americas and is co-authored with Kathryn Joy McKnight, Afro-Latino Voices: Narratives from the Early Modern Ibero-American Atlantic World, 1550-1812�(Hackett, 2009). Currently he is researching the experiences of black sailors, soldiers, and popular saints and how they carved out a place of belonging and respect for themselves within the Spanish and Portuguese empires.

Modern Latin America

I had this book assigned to me while I took my Modern Latin America and it was a great companion to the text book that was assigned as well because it provided an in-depth & personal narrative to the course as we proceeded to look at Latin America in modern times. Not to mention that the Professor I was taking was published in this volume. Although I think that it could be expanded to include a GLBT perspective this will have to wait till the next edition.

The book arrived earlier than I expected, and was exactly how the seller described it. Overall, I'd say it was a good buy. I compared prices of this book with a few other places, and this was the best deal.

Awesome Bodyweight Workout Program!

- Difficult yet accessible to most fitness levels
- Beautifully designed and well organized
- Interesting program/regimen, so you don't get bored
- More/Less Difficult alternatives for each exercise

Cons:
- Why just men? (There might be a few changes needed, but would it be so hard? Women can probably gain a lot from this book as is.)
- Could use more information about equipment alternatives (e.g. the inverted row shows a guy using a bar of a road barricade. Most of us don't have that, nor are we going to go outside and down the road in the middle of a set. Show us rings or bands. Something indoors and practical.)
- Some of the introductory sections are of questionable utility (e.g. the anatomy section is not integrated well enough into the rest of the book to make the information useful to the lay reader)

Overview:

Bodyweight Workouts for Men (BWM) is a three step bodyweight fitness program. Each step is a "level", a 4 week program, each with 6 days on and 1 rest day. There are 12 workouts per level, designed to allow you to workout each day while giving the appropriate muscles their day of rest. Also, the workouts tend to alternate in length and intensity, with days 1, 3, and 5 typically being longer than 2, 4, and 6. Each workout starts with the warm-up and then goes into a variety of different sets and routines, typically comprised of 10-15 different exercises.

BWM > 3 Levels > 12 different workouts per level > 10-15 different exercises per workout

As advertised, BWM has around 75 exercises, each with a more or less difficult alternative. All exercises have step by step pictures and good explanations. Each level uses around 30-35 exercises in the 12 workouts. This makes the workouts much more engaging since you'll only do the same workout twice every three months.

Personal impressions:

Wow! These workouts are brutal. I love them. I am overweight (~220lbs/100kg) and out of shape, but even with the modified exercises I can't finish the longer workouts. I will probably have to repeat Level 1 at least once before I'm in good enough health to complete the workouts unmodified. I'm cool with that. I like that the author doesn't hold punches.

I have dabbled with some bodyweight stuff (e.g. fitloop.co), though this is my first book. I prefer BWM because it is more challenging, the workouts are more interesting, it's well designed and composed, and the program allows me to do a bodyweight workout every day of the week.

I highly recommend BWM!

The book looks excellent but I have one point of confusion if anyone wants to help. Various workouts have "tri-sets," and each has three exercises. Listed below each exercise is the number of reps. However, some have several reps seperated by commas: "5x, 4x, 3x, 2x, 1x." I assumed this meant there would be 5 sets for that tri-set, but there's only 3. Does this mean to do 15 reps for each set? That is obviously substantially more haha. So how many of each exercise for each set? Thanks!
