FOR STUDENTS AND PRACTITIONERS: A CLEAR OVERVIEW OF THE COMPLEXITIES OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE - WITH COMPANION WEBSITE

An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers

Students of international trade law, as well as fully-fledged international lawyers, will welcome this recent publication from Routledge. This is the new fifth edition of ‘International Trade Law’ by Professor Indira Carr of the University of Surrey.

With the rapid growth of the global economy and the advent of -- and worldwide use of -- the internet, international trade has become truly international in reality as well as in name. Indeed much has changed since the previous edition of this respected work of reference was published in 2005 and even more has changed since the first edition come out in 1995. We are living in a ‘global village’ indeed. As a result, there is scarcely a legal practice anywhere that is not involved in some way in matters touching on, or pertaining to international trade law -- hence the usefulness and necessity of Carr’s book.

Of immense benefit to the student, as well as the busy practitioner, is the overview provided by this book, of the complexities of international trade as illustrated by case law and informed by legislation and international rules and conventions.

This area of law is of course, diverse as reflected in the size of this volume of over seven-hundred pages. Conveniently however, the contents are organised into six parts to include a wealth of up-to-date material in such subject areas as international sale of goods… electronic commerce… transportation of cargo… finance and insurance… and dispute resolution. The final part focuses on the problems and implications inherent in fighting corruption in international business: a cause for concern that is increasing rather than diminishing.

To facilitate and enhance the learning experience for the student, each chapter begins with an overview and ends with a list of suggestions for further reading. Research references abound too, in the copious footnoting throughout. Important points are further clarified by tables and diagrams and in addition, the student is directed to the resources of the book’s companion website, which contains a number of study aids, including multiple choice questions and annotated web links.

Oh -- yes, and note the seven appendices, the nineteen page index at the back and the no less than thirty-three page section containing tables of cases, statutes, statutory instruments, European legislation -- and another table of statues and other instruments.

The book, in short, is an amazingly rich and helpful resource of informative and instructive material for study and research which no student of international trade law should be without.

The publication date is cited as at 2014.
