A nice rigourous treatement of concepts of probability. What is missing is a formal treatment of vectors (general case for random variables).
Many proofs are supplied as well as some good examples. There are also some appendices on combinatorial analysis and set theory.

The AZW format is useless for Mathematics

The Kindle edition is dreadful!!..The AZW format is useless for Mathematics. I think that Amazon should warn about the great differences between the Kindle edition (very bad) and the paper print edition.I have purchased the Kindle edition and compared it with the printed edition, and I found big differences (in the mathematical symbols at least), the mathematical symbols are very much smaller than the letters of the literal part, the index of mathematical formulas very very small, impossible of understand in many cases, (this situation is very dangerous in understanding a mathematical formula) the mathematical symbols "out"of the line of writing, etc...very ugly. I return the Kindle edition and purchased the paper print edition.Obviously the AZW format could be very good for literature (Shakespeare,Hegel,Cervantes, etc) but for mathematics, NO WAY!...

Many of these terms are used interchangeably without recognizing that they have completely different meanings and, thus, require different measurement approaches and different types of interventions if they are to be optimized. The notion of creating a “dictionary” of these terms arose so that novices and experts, researchers and clinicians, can commonly address these health outcome challenges. The correct term for this collection of definitions is a “vocabulary for a vertical audience” as the definitions reflect the usage in QOL and health outcomes measurement rather than all usages and the definitions were written to have meaning for the novice while still being useful for the expert As a starting point for the vocabulary, terms were chosen based on the frequency of use in journal articles focussing on of quality of life research. The terms fall broadly into 8 concepts all of which have an identified need for consistent and correct terminology: research process, measurement properties, statistics for QOL research, designs for QOL research, patient reported outcomes (PROs), theories and models, knowledge translation, and personal factors. Rather than being “A malevolent literary device for cramping the growth of a language and making it hard and inelastic” (Ambrose Bierce, The Devil’s Dictionary), “This dictionary, however, is a most useful work.” (Ambrose Bierce, The Devil’s Dictionary). To avoid the “devil”, terms reflecting modern advances in outcomes research and design were included even they may not yet be in common usage in QOL research. For example, while designs like the stepped wedge or platform trials may not yet have penetrated the world of QOL research, they will not if no one knows about them. More than 20 people contributed definitions and following editing, the dictionary was opened up for review and comment from members of ISOQOL and their suggestions and modifications were included, adding a component of peer review to the process. Nancy E. Mayo, PhD Nancy Mayo is a Professor at McGill University in the Department of Medicine, Division of Clinical Epidemiology, and School of Physical and Occupational Therapy. Born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, she trained as a Physical Therapist at Queen’s University, and after several years of working clinically, she completed a doctoral degree in Epidemiology and Biostatistics, at McGill University. She has been educating health professionals and clinical researchers for over 25 years and has published over 200 scientific works in the peer reviewed medical literature as well as contributing to collective works such as Medical Uses of Statistics 4th Edition (Ed. Bailar and Hoaglin) and Physical Rehabilitation Outcome Measures (Finch, Brooks, Stafford, Mayo). Mayo has also written a number of scientific papers specifically related to education on research methods and statistics. The Dictionary of Quality of Life and Health Outcomes Measurement was inspired by students and was assembled as a way of helping novices and experts alike to “speak the same language” about measuring these important health outcomes; essentially, the intent was to improve the research-related quality of life of people working in this important field.

Excellent Lab Book, the author helped solve the Lab Setup Problems

I reviewed this book a few months ago and gave it 1 star as I was really upset about the lack of instructions for the Metasploitable labs. I have to correct my review to a 4 stars because Mr. Nestler saw the review and wrote explaining that he did not recieved my message and pointed me to a web site that had the document I was looking for. I had previously searched that same site with no luck, but it was updated. So to make things fair I correct my review to reflect the author's actions towards solving my problem. What follows is my original review:

"I bought this lab book a few weeks back because the text book is a great read (5 stars) and thought that the lab book will be a great asset. Unfortunately the book has no instructions on how to set the Metasploitable labs so you have a great deal of labs that can't be done. All Windows labs are ok. Even without instructions if you know Server 2003 administration you can set DNS, ftp and all the other things required, not the same with the Metasploitable machine.

The book has a website for extra material (also an excelent source of aditional material) that was supposed to include setup instructions... it didn't. The instruction are only for instructors. I tried contacting the publisher with no success as I'm no instructor. I contacted both Mr Conklin and Mr Nestler. Mr Conklin claimed he didn't have any material regarding the lab setup (something extremely strange... you were the co-author, so I wonder why you don't have a copy of the work you created) and Mr Nestler didn't even reply to my message."

Good but not 100%

While the labs are informative and well written, there are several problems:
Lab machine set up instructions are inaccurate and hard to obtain.
Many lab exercises contain references to software that the lab set up instructions do not correctly reference. The links are either inaccurate, the software you are told to install may actually not be correct or you may not be given any indication of what you need at all.
The labs occasionally contain instructions that simply do not work without unspecified intermediate steps that the student is left to figure out. For example, uploading a file via ftp to the Windows 2003 server without ever enabling Write permissions in IIS.
There is NO ERRATA for the lab manual. There is a site for it, but absolutely no entries in it at all and the book has quite a few errors.
The operating systems used are dated. Sorry, but XP and 2003? And do you have any idea how hard it is to get SP1?

Needs a lot of improvement to get 5 stars.

Great lab manual! It provides step by step directions for each lab. You need to have some basic knowledge in networking in order to understand this manual. It covers Windows and Linux based systems. It helped me to study for my Security + Exam and it goes well with CompTIA Security+ book.
