Streaks of Blue" by Jack Chaucer is an intriguing take on one of the darker aspects of our society. School shootings. It's sub-title is How the Angels of Newtown Inspired One Girl to Save Her School. Nicole Janicek is 17. Her long, dark hair is highlighted with streaks of blue dye that is one of her distinguishing features. She loves hiking in the New Hampshire White Mountains with her best friend, Candace. They revere Cheryl Strayed , author of the memoir "Wild". On their last hike before the start of their senior year at High School, Nikki longs to camp out at the Lakes of the Clouds above the tree line even though it's not allowed. When a hut crew member shows up to warn them about what they're doing, Candace makes a deal with him to let Nikki stay if she spends the night in the hikers hut. He agrees, as it's hard to say no to the 6 foot tall, gorgeous girl.
Nikki spends the night looking up at the stars. That night...she has an odd dream. A little girl appears in her tent... the girl tells her that her name is Star. She asks Nikki to accompany her to her classroom which is outdoors under the stars. She notices an older boy, the girl tells him his name is Adam. Adam Upton. Nikki remembers him from elementary school where they used to be friends. Then the teacher turns to Nikki and asks her for her help. They tell her Adam is planning something bad. The teacher writes a figure on the chalkboard. 12:14. They tell her to bring Adam back before it's too late. Nikki asks for the address and is told Star will give her a note, so she'll remember. It's a blue sticky note with stars on it. It says 14th & Stardust.
She wakes up in her tent. What could the dream mean? She searches in her pack to find her notebook...and finds a baggie she doesn't remember. Cookies from her mom, with a note. Contained in her mother's note are the date 14th, and the word stardust.
Was it just a dream? Or a premonition? Adam is a boy often referred to by other students as trailer-trash. His best friend is Thomas "Lee" Harvey an angry, sneering loser who identifies with the original Lee Harvey (Oswald). Are they planning something? Will she reach out to Adam? Despite Candace's objections?
I won't give away too much of the story. While the subject matter might have been trite or exploitive in other hands, Mr. Chaucer treats it with sensitivity and his characters sympathetically. It's tense, moving and thought-provoking. Nikki is an amazingly strong, smart and brave young woman. She's a great, realistic role model for girls (or anyone!). Give this one a try!
Plus, this is just up on the author's website: "And remember, no matter how or where you buy "Streaks of Blue," I'll be donating half of the proceeds to the Newtown Memorial Fund. So here's a chance to read my best novel yet AND help a worthy cause all at the same time!"

Awesome & exciting

I'm not a reader, but came across this book on Facebook...I couldn't put it down! We were on a cruise ship, but this book kept my attention until I finished it. Easy to read and easy to follow. I enjoyed every page, and hope that more of my friends read it, and help support Sandy Hook at the same time!I work in a school and I wonder what I would do put in such a position?

Awesome book, and I would definatelly recommend it to any age group. Congratulations to the Author!

Interesting read !!

I hadn't heard of this book until a friend was reading it and told me about it. Holds your interest and was very well written. I think it's a book everyone should read. Really has a hold on what is happening in our world today and let's you know there are still good people in this world and we all should try to see the good in other people. I would definately read more written by this author.

About the Author
Carol A. Cantrell, CPA, JD is a partner in the law firm of Cantrell & Cowan LLP in Houston, Texas. She specializes in tax planning, preparation, and representation before the IRS for families, closely held businesses, and investment entitites. Prior to starting her law practice, she spent her career in public accounting with Briggs & Veselka Co. and Cantrell & Company in Houston, Texas. Carol is a frequent speaker for national and state professional organizations on income taxation of estates and trusts, partnerships, and S Corporations and estate planning. She is the author of CCH's Stock Options: Estate, Tax and Financial Planning, a treatise on employee stock options. Carol represented the Rudkin Testamentary Trust before the United States Supreme Court in Knight v. Commissioner (2008), which atttempted to resolve a circuit split over which administrative costs of an estate or trust are exempt from the 2-percent floor on miscellaneous itemized deductions under IRC Section 67. F. Gordon Spoor has practiced public accounting in St. Petersburg, Florida since 1974. He is married to Chris Spoor and they have four children ranging in age from 28 to 35 and eight grandchildren. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of South Florida and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Suncoast Estate Planning Council and holder of a NASD series 65 Registered Investment Advisor Representative license. He is currently a member of the FICPA Federal Tax Committee, Chairman of the AICPA Trust, Estate & Gift Tax Technical Resource Panel, Chairman of the AICPA Fiduciary Accounting Matters Task Force and has served on a joint committee composed of the FICPA, Florida Bar and Florida Bankers Association regarding the rewriting of Florida s Trust Administration Code and revisions to Florida s Principal & Income Act. Gordon also serves as an expert witness for the State of Florida Board of Accountancy. Additionally, he serves as a discussion leader for continuing professional education courses and has been awarded an outstanding discussion leader award in every year the award has been given since he became a discussion leader in 1992. He is also the recipient of a 2000-2001 FICPA Presidential Service Award as a result of his efforts on behalf of the FICPA in serving as the lead representative of their Florida Uniform Principal & Income Act task force. He is a frequently published author on subjects relating to estates & trusts as well as the area of general tax practice. He has published numerous articles covering these topics and others. He is co-author of the FICPA s Fiduciary Accounting For Florida course materials and a contributing author to Florida Law of Trusts Fourth Edition (West Publishing). Much of his time is spent consulting in the area of fiduciary accounting and income tax as well as litigation support in trust matters.

A Cindrella Story

It was like being in a fairy tale story. I could just imagine me seeing Hilary Duff and Chad Michael Murry dancing at the halloween dance. And her working at the diner and getting her life back on track after what her evil step-family did to her. It was a wonderful story and I can't wait to see the movie tomorrow when it comes out. I love all Hilary Duff's albums and movies/shows she does.

This story was about a princess who lives with her stepmom and 2 stepsisters, because her dad died in an earthquake. Her stepmom is taking over her dads resteraunt now, and cinderella has to work there. She hates her life. She's like her stepmoms slave. The only good part about her life, is her instant messanger buddy Nomad. She knows he goes to her school but little does she know he's the most popular guy in school. And little does he know,she is the loser of the school. One day he asks her to go to the halloween dance with him. So she met him there and finds out who it is. And she wont take her mask off cause if he finds out who she is he wont like her anymore. They go walking and then she leaves realy fast. Then he finds out who she is and doesn't like her anymore. Then he thinks about it and knows that he can't just let his princess go. So he runs after her and they live happily ever after together. This was a great book because i like books that COULD be true but aren't realy true.

Not Another Fairy Tale Story

"A Cinderella Story: Movie Novelization" is great. I saw the movie first so I already knew what was going to happen but it was cool because the author described everything with more detail. The movie was good because you could actually see "Sam" (Hilary Duff) and "Austin" (Chad M. Murray) interact in real life. But the book had a certain charm and mystery to it. The booked also rocked because it came with tons of pictures from the movie!!!!!!! Chad is so fine and Hilary is so perfectly pretty!

Outstanding effort

As a student of leadership and a voracious reader of more than 100 books on the subject, I would like to compliment John Hope Bryant on writing a book that I believe ranks among the best that I have read. Love Leadership is an outstanding inaugural writing effort from an exciting new author.

This book is an easy read, but it's points of emphasis are anything but leadership lite. This is heavy weight, substantive, material. The concepts of Love Leadership apply to everyone who leads and since leadership is everyone's business - this book is suitable for everyone and applies to everyone.

My particuar favorite among John's leadership principles states "No storm...no rainbow." You can't have one without the other. I used that concept personally this evening when coaching a young man who was experiencing some personal stuggles. This individual needed leadership, but he also needed love. John's foundational beliefs enable the reader to easily and seamlessly apply both effectively.

The book is interesting and well written. Mr Bryant writes with passion, energy and enthusiasm. He also writes with skill and knowledge.

This was a page turner that I read in two days. When I put it down, I couldn't wait to pick it up again. I am a highlighter when I read and I found much to highlight in this book. His precepts are right on target. They are meorable and I will reference them often my role as a leader and a teacher of leaders.

John brings a bold, fresh, and courageous approach to a well documented, well researched, and frequently written about subject.

I have have discussed this book with my friends and I enthusiastically recommend it to others.

Read Love Leadership...you won't be disappointed.

A Lesson in Respecting Your Inherited Legacy

They say our lives are made not of atoms but stories. Bryant shares with us his own transformation from a man intent on proving himself successful in the traditional, business sense to one whose life finds meaning in the service of others. The author, now vice chair of the U.S. President's Advisory Council on Financial Literacy, entered the post-riots-zone of 1990s South Central Los Angeles, invited in some major power brokers who might not normally cruise this part of town and exposed them to the repressed yet golden potential that resided within the people of this community. Seeding financial literacy programs and additional services whereby citizens could own their own homes and businesses, he and his enlightened partners helped clear a space for hope to emerge from the ashes. Yes, these are the stories of l-i-f-e!

On a larger scale, Bryant takes on the fear, greed and "short term-ism" so rampant in modern day capitalism and asks us to consider the possibilities of a "good capitalism." (As I read this, I thought: Can we refine the rules of capitalism. One answer: Why not?!) Bryant shares many stories of successful business leaders, ministers, aspiring youth, line workers and U.S. Presidents who have inspired him. He challenges us to challenge ourselves to become "best in class" players in terms of how we apply our leadership talents in the world.

On a personal note, as I read this book I also pondered my own legacy and the tradition of servant-leaders from which I come (although back in the day, they were just good people trying to advocate for those less fortunate.) Many of us can tap into such legacies as it's the stuff this country was built on. Bryant makes a profound case for casting off our exuberant apathy and clearing a space for the power of love leadership to burn bright. This book will show you how. A Dynamic & Inspirational Message

John Hope Bryant is a man of conviction; dynamic & inspiring. His program, Operation HOPE has given hope to communities in their pursuit of a fearless path to economic prosperity. This book delivers a message of hope for anyone, that we can live our lives fearlessly, and with purpose; it's all about focusing on helping others first.

To the self-absorbed cynics throughout society, Bryant's message of "hope" may be perceived as nothing more than tired platitudes, with no real practical benefit in the real world. Wrong. His logic is sound; his advice relevent. This is a book that has very real, pragmatic solutions for much of our social challenges. We just have to read it and heed the advice.

Bryant's central theme revolves around eliminating the "fear-based" attitudes that seem to have taken over the world. I've been ranting about a "fear-based" culture permeating corporate America for quite some time; how it's killing innovation, employee morale, and productivity. Bryant takes that same concept and projects it to the world as a whole. It's time society changes that mindset. It's time to stop thinking about "Number One". That way of thinking has put us in the mess we're in today. Change is critical to our long-term well-being as a society.

Bryant is a true visionary, with a wonderful message to deliver. I hope the world listens, for its own sake.

I will probably be adding to this once my brain stops with excitement over this book, so moving on with the review!

Okay okay okay. I don't usually like to give out five star ratings (because let's face it, not every book is perfect) BUT GODS BE DAMNED THIS BOOK WAS PERFECT. Although I could do with more time between her relationships (you'll see what I mean when you read it, because I refuse to spoil anything).

Fallon is, in so many ways, a true warrior. We always end up reading about girls that already know how to fight. But in this case we see Fallon's failed efforts, brilliant wins & most importantly her PROGRESS. This girl is one hell of a bad ass female. She surpasses my expectation. She is also BY FAR one of my favorite female characters in ANY book. Yes I said it. A-N-Y book.

This book has equal parts drama, action, a hint (that's a lie it's no hint now that I think of it) of mystery & of course a bit of romance. What I mainly fail to comprehend is how Lesley Livingston was able to straight out SURPRISE me. There are some things I saw coming, yes. BUT there's others I didn't see coming at all. I have to applaud her for that. The book does end on semi happy notes - like most do. Which is good because it just builds up my anticipation for the next book in this series.

Lesley's power of description is her best partner. If that makes any sense. She is a master at it. Everything I read, I saw. Insanely vivid. I could hear the clashing of metal, the wheels of the chariots & the battle/war cries. But most importantly I connected with the main character CAUSE WE ALL KNOW IM A WARRIOR, A NINJA, IF YOU WILL. Yea no. That's not why. I felt her pain, loss & affection - most of all her little spark of hope that makes her fight harder each day.

I have to say that I'm thoroughly impressed with this book and I'm excited to see what Lesley does for the rest of this series.

Pure Fun

It has been a very long time since I have enjoyed a book entirely from cover to cover. I can honestly say there was never a dull moment as the author had a wonderful way of keeping me hooked. As soon as one chapter ended, the next had some new challenge or intrigue for our protagonist.

The descriptions by the author were beautiful and unique. I felt absolutely transported. I know when a book has successfully done this because the words begin to play out as a movie in my mind. The setting itself was so interesting! I always want to read books that are based in ancient Rome but unfortunately there aren't many in this genre and if there are, they prove to be somewhat stale. It is a challenge to make a historical period feel fresh and leap off the pages, but this author does it!

Fallon, the heroine, was a strong, independent woman. She was very capable of handling herself and even when she failed, she would rally and refused to quit. This was so refreshing to see as I hate weak protagonists. It was a little unbelievable that Fallon was stronger than some of her male counterparts that she sparred with in the book but suspending my disbelief in that realm, she was a tough inspirational little cookie. Her stubbornness was exasperating at times but it totally fit within her personality. She has a great capacity to care for those around her which also made me really like her as a character.

I will say that the author did not successful convince me in the romance department. The author had plenty of moments where Fallon and her love interest were showing affection but I can say that I never quite felt that their chemistry was real.

Other than a few quibbles, it was such a wonderful story. Please don't miss out on this one! It is such an entertaining read. AND! It will make you want to watch the movie Gladiator afterwards so be prepared for that.

New storyline that keeps you interested

I bought this book on Amazon's recommendation and the ratings of others.
I couldn't put this book down! I finished it within hours of starting it. The author has a story line that kept me intrigued. She kept it interesting and made me want to keep reading with the cliff hangers she left in certain chapters. After reading this book, I'm going to look into the author and see if she has any other books for purchase.
