The old man looks like a cross between a cartoon granddad and a swami; he sits on top of a cactus, and tells his young listener that the best way to get over any sadness is to imagine all the ways you could be worse off. "Suppose, just suppose, you were poor Herbie Hart, who has taken his Throm-dim-bu-lator apart!" This has a more hurried, formulaic feel than the best Seuss, and it seems to showcase a less acute grasp of child psychology than usual. (Does it really make a child feel better to think of poor Harry Haddow, who, "try as he will, can't make a shadow," or Gucky Gown, "who lives by himself ninety miles out of town"?) Good concept, but a bit of a tongue twister. We love the theme of the book, but as in all classic Suess, he makes up a lot of words and my toddler sometimes gets confused with all the strange funny words he's never heard before. Not my favourite Suess, but the message makes me happy to have it in our book collection.

Everyone Should own This!

Adults as well as children appreciate this book. The message that we should all consider how lucky we are is delivered in classical Seuss style with rhymes and nonsensical words - but is still a powerful message that most of us need to hear now and then. I consider this one of his best works because it not only delivers a good message, reading it is delightful entertainment. Read it aloud to both young and old.

About the Author
Frank W. Zammetti is a web architect specialist for a leading worldwide financial company by day, and a PocketPC and open-source developer by night. He is the founder and chief software architect of Omnytex Technologies, a PocketPC development house.He has over 12 years of "professional" experience in the information technology field, and over 12 more of "amateur" experience. He began his nearly life-long love of computers at age 7, when he became one of four students chosen to take part in his school district's pilot computer program. A year later, he was the only participant left! The first computer Frank owned was a Timex Sinclair 1000 in 1982, on which he wrote a program to look up movie times for all of Long Island (and without the 16k expansion module!). After that, he moved on to a Commodore 64 and spent about 4 years doing nothing but assembly programming (games mostly). He finally got his first IBM-compatible PC in 1987, and began learning the finer points of programming (as they existed at that time!).Frank has primarily developed web-based applications for about 8 years. Before that, he developed Windows-based client/server applications in a variety of languages. Frank holds numerous certifications including SCJP, MCSD, CNA, i-Net+, A+, CIW, MCP, and numerous BrainBench certifications. He is a contributor to a number of open source projects, including DataVision, Struts, PocketFrog, and Jakarta Commons. In addition, Frank has started two projects: Java Web Parts and The Struts Web Services Enablement Project. He also was one of the founding members of a project that created the first fully functioning Commodore 64 emulator for PocketPC devices (PocketHobbit).Frank has authored various articles on topics that range from integrating DataVision into web apps, to using Ajax in Struts-based applications. He is working on a new application framework specifically geared to creating next-generation web applications.

Very compelling

The authors' use of case studies and real-life examples makes this more than a textbook -- and much more readable than one. I found myself excited about reading each chapter. And I know I'll be looking up things in it in the future. My only quibble is that I found many copyediting errors that I hope the publisher will fix for future editions.

About the Author
Retired after thirty years of teaching a class of preschool children with severe oral language disabilities, Jennifer Chop still thinks fondly of the "good old days" of teaching. She has a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley in Oriental Languages and an M.A. in Speech and Language Pathology from California State University, Sacramento. With her husband of forty-three years they live in Kensington, California with their two-year old dog, Lucy. Jennifer raised two fantastic daughters, on whom she tested out so many of her theories about child development that they often wondered why their toys went missing. In another life, she might have been a toy inventor. Jennifer has traveled extensively to many countries around the world: rode camels in deserts, watched elephants paint flowers and self portraits, played elephant polo, flown next to the Himalayas, rode horses among the moais on Easter Island. These experiences inspired her to bring the same magic and wonder into her classroom. Jennifer loved studying the ways children learned and figuring out what clicked for them. These challenges and solutions manifested in many "aha" moments. Throughout her career she thrived on dreaming up art projects from interesting children's literature that were fun and messy, and that taught vocabulary and concepts to her students. She loved using magic tricks in her class to get the students to practice their speech and language skills.

Great for all teachers!

As someone who is about to go into the teaching field, I couldn't be happier with the information in this book. I am not going to be a preschool teacher, but I still found the advice that Chop gives extremely insightful. Some of the things she talks about, I would never have thought to address. I would have found myself dialing 911 before the end of the year for sure. I highly recommend.

What you really need to teach

This book displays in helpful and readable style the experience of 30 plus years teaching special needs kids, a job that i doubt that i could do successfully for even one year. And there are insights and recommendations for dealing with kids in general--like your own children or grandchildren. It's about time someone did something to make sure teachers get real world, useful information, rather than just stuff taught at teacher's colleges. Highly recommended!
