Great introduction to the KR perspective

Dr. Markman takes the reader on a tour of the different theoretical models that cognitive science researchers have used to try to represent knowledge content and the thinking processes that operate upon it. This is a nice introduction to the knowledge representation perspective within cognitive science, and it prepares the reader for a more in-depth venture into one or more of the topics covered. Graduate students and others will have an easy time with Dr. Markman's writing style, and important work is cited throughout. If you're interested in knowledge representation, this is a good way to get started.

About the Author

Tore Janson is now affiliated to the Department of Linguistics, Stockholm University. Until his retirement in 2001, he was Professor of African Languages at the University of Gothenburg. Previously, he had been Professor of Latin at the same university and is a world expert on its history. He is the author of the international bestsellers Speak: A Short History of Languages and The Natural History of Latin.

I'm about half way through, but.....

The History of Languages: An Introduction is written as an Oxford Textbook in Linguistics. But don't let "textbook" or fears that linguistics can be dry deter you. This text (mine is the paperback) is readable and accessible to anyone who travels, who has ever wanted to imagine the arc of language development in a chosen area.... or who wonders--beyond the late night idle chatter level--how and why people have ended up writing and speaking so differently in different parts of the world. It's not a breezy book, but it's not stuffy. It's carefully written and is worth reading in chunks with times inbetween for thinking.

The author puts outline questions at the beginning, good helpful section headers, and some follow up questions at the end of each chapter. I AM an English language professor, and like the prior reviewer said was his case, I too certainly will recommend this to students. Our university has an Around the World semester, and if this book can come out on Kindle, students like ours who are to be exposed to vastly varying languages in a semester (Arabic, Spanish, Thai, Hungarian etc) could benefit from the discussions.

Savvy high schoolers and up--anyone with an interest in language/cultural history--will be able to understand the sequences on the multiplication of languages (e.g., Latin splintered) and the death of others (like Gothic or Cornish, or the languages swallowed up by Chinese). Professor Janson writes with a conversational tone, working in familiar names like Dante and less familiar terms like Khoisan. He gives enough information to keep us in the discussion but not so much as to be ponderous. What I enjoyed is the humility exhibited in phrases like "Linguists disagree about..." making the reader feel more like a co-discoverer about languages rather than someone being talked down to.

While I'm reading the book sequentially (and underlining a lot), I could imagine someone dipping in and out of the chapters too, for serendipitous enjoyment and learning via sectional gobbits. Susan Bachman

Fascinating

This book was suggested to me by a professor and it's one of the most interesting books I've read.

As a brief outline, it spans the history of languages from before human languages existed to scenarios in the distant future. He explains the importance of writing systems, such as Egyptian hieroglyphs, Chinese, Greek, Latin, and Arabic. There's a great section that deals with Latin and when it actually ceased to be spoken. General world history is explained to describe what happened to the world's langauges and how they are inseparably tied together with those events. There's also a fascinating section on language birth, creation, and death. The books ends explaining the current situations of English and of Chinese, and ends with speculations on the future.

I'd recommend this to anyone interested in language, history, or any other related field. It's free of linguistic jargon, and could be understood by people of all academic fields.

Good Introductory Text

Read the title of this book carefully, because the book is just what the title says. It is not a book about historical linguistics, it is a book about the history of languages, placed firmly in the framework of political and social history. The book proceeds to discussion of how language itself might have evolved, through the identification of language families, through the development of individual languages, and finally to what the future might hold. The author is notably balanced in his approach, and modest in his claims. Overall, the focus is on European languages and on English in particular, but there is enough discussion of other languages and language groups to make this a more general approach than one often sees. One very strong point is the style. It is accessible and well-written, which makes it a pleasant read for the non-student even though it is clearly a textbook. And it avoids the "acadamese" that has become a curse in so much serious writing about the humanities. I didn't enjoy this book as much as "Empires of the Word", which covers much of the same ground, but that may be because that was a book written for popular consumption, and this is au fond a text. And I should stress that I learned a good bit from "History of Languages", even though I have read a great deal on the topic.

The best single-volume Wilson biography/history

Heckscher's work is perhaps the best single-volume Woodrow Wilson biography/history available. The book is lengthy and for the most part provides readers with plenty of depth and detail. It also includes several excellent photos. Overall the book is well written, and readers will notice both Heckscher's familiarity with Wilson and the amount of research he put into writing the book.

There are a few shortcomings however. A few topics seem to get treated with so much detail that one may have the feeling they are reading a dry reference book. With other areas, such as Wilson's state-by-state tour to drum up public support for the League of Nations, Heckscher seems to be gloss over much of the endeavor to the point of making the reader feel as if they are reading a condensed summary.

At the end of the book is an extensive bibliography, including brief comments about each work. This is a very handy resource for those who may want more info on a particular aspect of Wilson, the League of Nations, presidential incapacity, etc.

If you are a Wilson fan or a serious student of presidential history, then this book is a must-have.

For those who want to learn about Woodrow Wilson but don't want to read for a 743-page, 3-pound epic, I would recommend starting with H.W. Brands' "Woodrow Wilson" (part of "The American Presidents Series" edited by Arthur Schlesinger Jr.). Despite being much shorter at just 169 pages, the scope of Brands' book is comparable to Heckscher's. Brands' book is a more enjoyable and easier read, and yet it's intelligently written with enough detail to give you a good understanding of Wilson.

An Aging Whitewash by a Wilson Advocate

Oddly coincidental, the Woodrow Wilson Wikipedia page is apparently largely derived from this book. The Wikipedia page on Woodrow Wilson has about 128 separate references to an even wider number of pages in this book. I believe the essence of this book can be seen as a typical whitewashed biography of a 'great' American. Heckshur is full of excuses and rationalizations for Wilson's failures and bigotry, his tightening of federal segregation, failures at Versailles, all of which he readily provides excuses. You will not find mention that in the first month of Wilson being in office concerns by Wilson's conservative Postmaster of 'sharing of bathrooms' with 'negroes' in the Postal Railway Service required immediate action. The National Postal Museum website has a page on this, 'Woodrow Wilson:Federal Segregation' fortunately not subject to being scrubbed by the Wilson lovers at Wikipedia. Action on the Postal Service was taken with Wilson approval to tightly segregate the important federal agency as to bathrooms, wash basins and towels. Heckshur doesn't mention this, but notes the increase in segregation and air brushes it away, making excuses such as 'in accord with public opinion' or 'out of concern for his considerable legislative agenda'. No mention made that Wilson may have been just pandering to racists for his own political benefit. A great President leads and changes public opinion, tries to unite the nation, Wilson was doing the opposite, going the racist route within one month of taking office.

A "Near-Great" Biography of a "Near-Great" President...

The top five Presidents in American history are called "great" Presidents by historians, and the next five Presidents are usually referred to as "near-great". Woodrow Wilson, our 28th President, is usually placed into the near-great category. "Near-great" Presidents are those leaders who accomplished many of their goals, but fell just short in one area. And "near-great" is also how I would rate this biography by August Heckscher. It is easily the best one-volume biography of Wilson to appear in many years. Heckscher writes eloquently of Wilson's troubled childhood. The first President from the South since the Civil War, Wilson grew up in the shadow of his domineering father, a well-known and intimidating Presbyterian minister in some of the South's largest and wealthiest churches. The elder Wilson expected nothing less than perfection, and his son often had a difficult time meeting those expectations. As a result he often turned to his doting mother for emotional warmth and support, and as Heckscher notes, he would always be extremely dependent upon the support and encouragement of women to boost his self-confidence.

Not surprisingly, perhaps, Wilson still grew up to resemble his father, for good and ill. On the positive side Wilson was strong-willed, extremely intelligent, ambitious, idealistic, and an eloquent orator like his father. But on the negative side he could be narrow-minded and self-righteous, humorless (at least in public), inflexible, and prone to making enemies. His health was also poor, and it can be persuasively argued that he suffered two major strokes before assuming the Presidency - once in 1896 and another in 1908. However, neither Wilson nor anyone else recognized them as strokes, but instead he regarded them as "nervous breakdowns". The first and only President with a Ph.D (in political science) Wilson enjoyed a distinguished academic career, first as a professor at Princeton University and then (from 1902-1910) as the President of Princeton. Wilson transformed the sleepy, laid-back campus into the distinguished university that it still is today, but his domineering leadership style earned him many enemies, and Wilson eventually quit after losing a bitter battle to change the living and social conditions on campus by forcing the wealthier students to live and work with the less well-to-do. In 1910 the corrupt Democratic bosses of New Jersey were looking for a "respectable" candidate to run for Governor - someone who could legitimately run as an "honest" candidate while being weak or naive enough to remain under their control. In Wilson, a nationally known college president and intellectual, they thought they had their man, or rube. Wilson accepted their offer, won the election, and then dramatically turned against the bosses, leading a major effort to clean up New Jersey politics. His about-face won national acclaim and helped make him the Democratic presidential candidate in 1912. In one of the nation's most colorful and historic presidential races, he defeated his two opponents - President Taft, the Republican candidate, and Teddy Roosevelt, the third-party Progressive candidate - and became President.

During his two terms as President, Wilson passed major domestic legislation such as giving women the right to vote, ending child labor, and improving safety conditions in factories and mines. He also endured the crushing death of his first wife from kidney disease, quickly remarried a year later, and tried desperately to keep the nation out of World War One. In 1916 he barely won re-election in a race that was so close the winner wasn't announced for several days. In early 1917, after German submarines began sinking unarmed American merchant vessels, Wilson convinced Congress to declare war on Germany and the nation entered World War One. At the end of the war in 1919 came Wilson's greatest failure. Determined to bring about "world peace", Wilson helped create the League of Nations to peacefully settle disputes between countries. He knew, however, that without US membership and leadership the League would be useless. Unfortunately, Wilson's domineering leadership style as President had alienated the Republicans and even some members of his own party in Congress. Led by Senator Henry Cabot Lodge of Massachusetts, they were determined to defeat Wilson and prevent US entry into the League. To gain public support for his cause, President Wilson went on a nationwide speaking tour by train. But in early 1919 he suffered a massive stroke that nearly killed him. He was not able to return to work for months (his second wife and staff kept the news from the public, and his wife was in many ways the "acting President" during this period). Wilson never regained the full use of his body or speech, and Lodge and his allies were able to easily defeat the League. An invalid, Wilson died in 1924 after predicting that the US would pay a huge price for its' failure to join the League, which was proven true when the League proved to be powerless to stop Hitler's rise to power in the 1930's.

Heckscher eloquently lays out these details (and many others) about Wilson's life and career. However, the book fails to turn up any original or new insights into Wilson's life and character that previous biographies have not already discussed. Additionally, Heckscher largely ignores another dark side of Wilson's life - his strong racist beliefs regarding blacks. Wilson's low opinion of African-Americans has been an ugly blot on his Presidency that many historians chose to ignore until the 1990s, and Heckscher would have been well-advised to at least mention in some detail this flaw in his character. Among other things, Wilson as President went out of his way to enforce segregation in previously-integrated federal departments and agencies, and many black workers were fired or given lower-paying manual-labor jobs. Despite this flaw, however, this is still an excellent and detailed account of a high-minded, well-meaning, but ultimately flawed and tragic President. Recommended!

An Expendable Man

Thoroughly enjoyed this, enjoyed it far more than I initially thought I would. A split second decision and Dr Hugh Densmore knew that he would rue the day he stopped for a young woman on the side of the road.

What I enjoyed about this novel was the plausibility of the story. I think we've all made a decision on the spur of the moment - even though alarm bells are ringing but you ignore them and your decision comes back to bite you......big time.

I loved the underlying tension, disquiet of the story, it was always there.....just bubbling under the surface.

I felt that the story "fell away" slightly at the end, that's the only quibble I had with this very excellent story. There were a few twists that I didn't see coming at all. A thought provoking story that offered a lot more to the reader than just a "classic noir" novel.

Very good

In The Expendable Man, Hugh Densmore is a young intern doctor who travels from his hospital in LA to Phoenix to attend a relative's wedding. On his way there, he picks up a young, teenage hitchhiker, who later ends up dead in Scottsdale. As you might expect, the subject of the novel, and its tone, is extremely dark and gritty--almost bleakly so. Coupled with descriptions of the heat of the desert, Arizona is therefore a perfect place to set this novel, which also addresses larger social and racial themes--think a Patricia Highsmith plot paired with a Harper Lee message, although less skillfully done.

The "wrong man accused" plot is common in fiction, but Dorothy Hughes breathes new light into it with a stunning twist about a third of the way through. It's an especially incredible twist considering that this novel takes place only a few years after the civil rights movement. In some ways I wish that the twist had been revealed a little bit earlier, however. Also, I'm not so sure that people would have been so impervious to issues of race so soon after the civil rights movement. But the impact of what happens is absolutely stunning nonetheless.

Hughes is also skilled at writing about the Arizona landscape--though I wish she'd written more about the wildlife (where are the coyotes? Bobcats? Javelinas? Scorpions? The latter would have made for great symbolism in this novel). Still, Dorothy Hughes knew the Phoenix/Scottsdale area quite well, and describes it in minute detail, right down to specific establishments on specific streets. Hughes keeps saying how isolated the Arizona landscape is, so it's amazing to think how much the area must have been developed since then. The Expendable Man perhaps isn't my favorite of the books that Persephone has reprinted, but it's an extremely atmospheric thriller that I enjoyed a lot.

Great book and a Fascinating topic!

First, let me say that I usually don’t give 5 stars (look at my other reviews) when giving a review; so this should give you a good indication of how much I liked this book. I have read a lot of material on the latest advances in medicine and through this material, I learned a little about the importance of the microbes in a person’s intestines; however, until reading this book, I had no idea about why they were so important. I was frankly amazed at how many diseases could possibly be caused by an imbalance in the diversity of these microbes. Obesity, diabetes, mental illnesses were all addressed in this book, showing how they all may be caused by this imbalance. Of particular note, I was amazed at the connection to autism and the antibiotics that could very well contribute to it. Many of the facts I found so amazing that I had to do further research on the internet. My research did not find anything which would contradict what I read in the book.
Great book which I would highly recommend for anyone interested on microbes, the diseases listed above or even any expecting parents.

Fantastic book. Extremely well written and chock full of very important information - how we can hurt our microbiome and how we can help repair it. I am begging everyone I know to read this book, especially people considering becoming parents. This book will arm you with essential information about how to give your child the best start in life, microbially speaking. I could not put this book down.

Competent freshman effort

I actually picked this up because I read a blog entry by Wardell lamenting that people angry at him for something unrelated had dropped some hateful fake reviews here. I don't usually read this kind of book (I don't read much modern literature at all, not a lot of fantasy these days, books centered around the universe of a TV show, movie or game, not at all) but I thought an honest review might help drown out those with an axe to grind.

I think I've played a few turns of the game (years ago), but it didn't grab me. If I have played it, nothing from that experience carried into the book.

My take is that this is a competent freshman effort from Wardell. It is a little clunky at times, to be sure, though not to where I had trouble following what was going on. It starts off feeling very generic, too. You've got demons and demigods and a special stable boy hero and his special princess, and so on. An invading army captures the keep they're in, and they must quest to find an artifact that can stop the villainous demigod.

But for a 500+ page book, it actually goes by pretty fast and pretty smooth. There are a couple of issues that speculative fiction writers must deal with, and I liked some of approaches Wardell used, and others less so. It can be disastrous, for example, to write dialogue in a pseudo-medieval cant ("Dost thou wisheth to pass?"), and Wardell keeps things contemporary. But at the same time, you can end up feeling too modern, a little too casual.

The writing is serviceable. It doesn't really stand out but it gets the job done. At one point, I came to a crashing halt when one of the characters says "The prodigal son returns!" This is a clich�, of course, which ain't great. But it's also a reference to the very specific Biblical story. And it's not being used correctly here, which we could read as "well, this is a translation of a similar story in Elemental" but I think it's just an overlooked detail. That sort of thing might not bother you, but to me it's akin Gimli insulting Legolas by calling him "New Coke".

That aside, by the end of the book, you're getting a sense of the richness of the world. This particular book gives you a tiny slice of a much bigger history, and there's a careful attention that world's details that, if reflected in the writing, could be an epic masterpiece. I would not be opposed to reading more in this vein.

I feel like the author was really beginning to find his feet, and hope he continues to write in the future.

Give me more!!!

Let me start by saying that I genuinely hope that my review influences any fence-sitters to take a leap and order this!

I bought this book, not as a tie-in to the game, but because I am a curious and somewhat new reader to the Sci-Fi/Fantasy genre of books. Therefore, it was with an open mind that I decided to read Elemental: Destiny's Embers. Imagine my surprise when I found the style of reading easy to follow, the characters engaging, and the plot just complex enough to enjoy without feeling like I needed a glossary of terms beside my bed (Neal Stephenson, take note).

My only criticism with Elemental: Destiny's Embers is that it was clearly written to be part of a series - three, maybe four books? - and although I have searched the internet ether exhaustively, it appears that there MAY NOT BE a sequel or series in the works. Why? Imagine Harry Potter ending after the Sorcerer's Stone, or Hunger Games stopping after, well, the Hunger Games. Or Ender's Game...hold on - that series SHOULD have been nixed after Ender's Game (Mr. Card, shame on you).

So, with that said: Mr. Wardell - please get off of your $%*& and finish the series.

And finally - does anyone other than me want to get their hands (and teeth) on a calivar?

Elemental: Destiny's Embers

I loved this book! I went into it having already played Elemental: Fallen Enchantress, and didn't expect much having read the very unfavorable reviews on Amazon, but I thought it was very well written, had a good flow and tied in several threads that flow through Fallen Enchantress and other Stardock games. I think this was an excellent venture into "world building" in the Stardock universe.
