About the Author
Richard F. Summers, MD, ABPN, is Clinical Professor and Co-Director of Residency Training in the Department of Psychiatry at the Perelman School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania. He has written extensively on psychodynamic therapy, the therapeutic alliance, psychodynamic formulation, psychiatric education, and positive psychology. With Jacques P. Barber, Dr. Summers is coauthor of Psychodynamic Therapy: A Guide to Evidence-Based Practice and coeditor of Practicing Psychodynamic Therapy: A Casebook. Dr. Summers is the recipient of numerous national and local teaching awards, serves as Chair of the American Psychiatric Association Council on Medical Education and Lifelong Learning, and is a member of the Psychiatry Review Committee of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Past president of the American Association of Directors of Psychiatry Residency Training, he maintains an active clinical practice.
Jacques P. Barber, PhD, ABPP, is Professor and Dean of the Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies at Adelphi University. He is also Emeritus Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry and in the Psychology Graduate Group at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was formerly Associate Director of the Center for Psychotherapy Research, and Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at New York University School of Medicine. His research focuses on the outcome and process of psychodynamic and cognitive therapies for depression, panic disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, substance dependence, and personality disorders. He has published more than 225 papers, chapters, and books in the field of psychotherapy and personality. With Richard F. Summers, Dr. Barber is coauthor of Psychodynamic Therapy: A Guide to Evidence-Based Practice and coeditor of Practicing Psychodynamic Therapy: A Casebook. Dr. Barber is past president of the Society for Psychotherapy Research and a recipient of its Distinguished Research Career Award.�

Lucid, well integrated contemporary approach

Congratulations and kudos to Dr. Summers and Dr. Barber for their lucid and up to date text. They have swept away many cobwebs from outmoded notions of psychoanalytic psychotherapy. They present a contemporary, pluralistic, and humanistic vision, firmly rooted in a biopsychosocial model.
The authors integrate contemporary and traditional psychoanalytic models with cognitive behavioral, neuropsychological, and family systems paradigms. Sometimes attempting to integrate models results in muddy thinking. However, the authors establish and retain a clarity of vision.
This is a well researched book. Whenever possible, the authors use the best evidence currently available. When evidence is either not available or not possible to obtain due to the nature of the field, they use good common sense and clinical wisdom.
Their approach throughout I find to be highly respectful of patients as people with strengths and vulnerabilities. As such the writing models as well as espouses a therapeutic alliance based on mutuality, transparency, and a respect for autonomy.
The book is written clearly and simply, and not in the obfuscating prose sometimes used in this literature. Although it is written for the beginning clinician, there is much of value to the more experienced practitioner. I learned from reading this book. It helped me articulate more clearly some of my own thoughts regarding psychoanalytically based psychotherapies, and as such is useful in my own practice as well as in doing supervision.

An excellent and useful book for clinicians

This is a wonderful book. It is a unique collaboration written by two authors both at the University of Pennsylvania, one a psychiatrist who is a practicing psychoanalyst and the other a psychologist who is a well known psychotherapy researcher. It is highly readable and practical in its approach. This is not your typical psychoanalytic book, filled with difficult and dense jargon. The writing is practical and hands on with plenty of clinical examples. The book uses evidenced based ideas from psychotherapy research in a way that is somewhat unusual: it integrates these findings into a sensible approach to dealing with patients. Positive psychology, family systems therapy, and behavioral and cognitive approaches are given respect and even integrated into their approach without feeling forced. I cannot think of another psychodynamic text that does this- the authors obviously have respect for other psychotherapies and are unashamedly practical in their approach to treating patients and seeing the limits of their approach. This is a good book for beginners who are learning "the ropes" of psychotherapy of any kind, or for experienced psychoanalysts or psychodynamically trained clinicians who want an evidence based contemporary approach to treating their patients in psychotherapy. Highly recommended.

Great teaching text

I use this book as the primary text in my undergraduate field practicum seminar; in this course, students have individual clinically-related field placements in addition to regular class meetings. Most of the students' internship placements involve observing group therapies and interacting informally with clients at different kinds of agencies. Typically, none of the students conduct or observe individual therapy and none of the placements offer training in psychodynamic principles.
Despite the obvious differences between the students' field placements and the focus of Summers and Barber's text, I use this book to help my students appreciate the value of psychoanalytic ideas in action, both in the many excellent clinical examples in the book and in applications of the themes from the book to their work at their field placements.
The students love the book, and so do I. Thanks to the many clinical examples and the clear explanations of complex ideas, the undergraduates, who typically have little prior exposure to psychoanalytic ideas, can grasp the important concepts and apply their knowledge at their placements, deepening their understanding of their clients and themselves. Certainly, they do not appreciate all the subtleties, and there is much in this book to satisfy students at more advanced levels of training. That said, one of the most important lessons my students take from this book is that psychoanalytic theory is both practical and applicable to many common clinical problems.
In sum, this is a terrific book for teaching psychoanalytic principles and technique at many levels. Based on my experience, I recommend its use at the undergraduate level, and expect that it would be even more valuable for teaching students with greater knowledge of psychotherapy and some background in psychoanalytic theory.
