About the Author
Danny King was born in Slough, near London in 1969. After leaving school, he went to work on a building site where he met his fair share of petty criminals and general nutters. In the late 1980s, following convictions of various offences, including burglary, he gave up crime, got an education and started to work as a journalist on top shelf magazines. He lives in South London.

A series of short stories

If you are in the mood for a series of slightly related, humorous short stories then this book is for you. There is not a single story line that ties all of the stories together. Overall a fun group of stories.

Foul mouthed, irreverent and authentic

Bex and Ollie spend their evenings in their dreary South-Eastern town either boozing or burgling. Narrator Bex takes his clandestine activities very seriously, and considers his thieving a trade, with skills to be honed and a moral code to be observed. His unflinching observations of every character, including himself, are perfectly pitched and blackly hilarious.

There's little happiness in Bex's life and even less glory or success, but he's honest about his failings and his prospects and it's this, along with his redemptive qualities and self-deprecating humour which King combines so well.

For some reason I couldn't put it down

I'm not a big fan of constant profanity but King' s characters seem to require it and they become loveable in a crude sort of way. King is a much better storyteller than writer (and proofreader) which makes you feel it's all genuine inside those pubs, flats and jails of Britain. This is my second Danny King book after reading The Henchmen's Book Club and I'll probably end up reading most of his works when I need a fun and funny read.

Maybe I'm a member of the wrong generation, but I didn't find any of the jokes funny and I found it boring and lacking in any depth at all. There's no plot, no solution, there's not even much characterization. I'd say if you'd like to buy a funny book, look somewhere else.

A good basic introduction and overview of several martial art systems.

The large (9 by 12) hardcover book was written in 1997 but it is still a good introductory text on the basic elements of several popular martial arts. The text is broken down into five parts.

Part one covers Taekwondo and even though this volume us supposed to be merely an introduction to the art, it shows numerous jumping techniques which are clearly advanced movements. Part two explains the sport of judo and shows several basic falling and throwing techniques of this art. Part three deals with the basics of ju-jitsu, showing various self-defense techniques of that system of combat. Part four covers karate basic techniques taken from the Shotokan karate system. The final part gives an overview of the Chinese Kung Fu system of self-defense. There is also a short section of the terms used in this book. This book also has an index.

In conclusion, this book would be of interest to anyone who desires to learn the basic principles of numerous self-defense, sport and combat systems. It is not a comprehensive study of any of these martial arts, but rather an overview approach to the subjects.

This book is great for beginners. An excellent introduction to some of the basic techniques im martial arts. A must have for all beginners. Written excellently.

Mercedes Pavlicevic is Associate Professor and Director of the Music Therapy Programme at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, and Visiting Researcher at the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Centre in London.
