Not your typical erotic, stepbrother book. . .

I'm not really into BDSM books, or stepbrother stories, for that matter. I read them but they're usually not very romantic, and I'm not a big fan. I decided to read this one because it sounded good, and I love Selena Kitt. I have to honestly say, I'm so glad I took a chance on it. It's not your typical erotic, stepbrother book. Sure, the hero has got the whole, brooding, ex-soldier with a dark side thing going on, but he's also incredibly sweet and caring. His soft underbelly isn't just for the heroine, either. He's got a few secret agendas and actually making a difference in the world, is a big one. The heroine is a bit annoying. She declares she can be a bitch, but I didn't really see that, though she tries hard. Mostly, I saw an extremely sheltered, almost to the point of abused, lonely girl who just wants to be shown love, but is afraid to be hurt. There are quite a few twists and turns here. A major mystery, and a not so major one, are both solved very satisfactorily, and the ending is sigh-worthy. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

WOW! Where do I even begin! That's a first for me! Normally I never have a problem writing a review for a book. Most of the time, it's the exact opposite and usually have too much to say, but by the end of this novel I was left totally speechless and sobbing uncontrollably. I'm familiar with Selena Kitt's work and have read many of her stories so I know to expect the totally unexpected in her novels but this story totally blew me away. And just for the record, this is a totally standalone full length novel with NO cliffhanger so you most definitely will not be left hanging. In fact, this story has a little bit of everything. So regardless of your reading preference, you will most likely love this story. Do you love erotic romance? It's included. Suspense, Mystery and Intrigue? Definitely included! Kidnapping and Sex Trafficking? Included! BDSM? It's most certainly included! Heartbreaking angst? Included! Fiery Passion and Steamy Sex? Yep, also included - in SPADES! I've been reading since the tender age of six and I've read more books than I can count but I've never read a book that surprised me as much as Step Beast and I mean that in a very good way. This novel tiptoed into my consciousness purring like a kitten and exited, roaring like a lion! The story is exciting, raw, gritty, emotional, mysterious, suspenseful, unexpected, unique, thrilling, exciting, romantic, sensual, seductive, erotic and very well crafted. The narrative is exceptionally well written in the third person from the point of view of the female lead character, Tilly Beeston. Often, I find books written with only one point of view can sometimes be a little shallow and boring but not Step Beast. On this occasion, it actually gives the reader an opportunity to better understand the depth and complexity of Tilly's nature, gives us much more insight into her character and helps us understand the reasons for her attitude, disposition, self degradation and behavior. The dialogue is well executed and seamless. The story also includes a well developed and fascinating cast of characters. I found them to be captivating, intriguing, engaging and relatable. Kitt expertly combines these elements into a deliciously entertaining novel filled to the brim with danger, drama, mystery, suspense, intrigue, heated attraction, fiery passion, steamy sex and taboo erotic romance. And yes, it even includes an enticingly generous measure of BDSM! Hubba! Hubba! Yep, as I said, it has it all!
Beautiful twenty two year old Mathilda Beeston feels as if she's never been able to do anything right. She's always been someone else's problem. When she was conceived, she was a mistake. As a baby she was an accident. As a child she was a nuisance. As a teen, an annoyance. As a young woman, always a problem. So, how could she ever expect to be happy? Tilly never understood his reason for taking his life; her mother was independently wealthy herself - old family money. Olivia "Liv" Garrett Beeston, Tilly's mother, was a blue-blood Garrett with all the money, power and prestige that accompanied the lofty family name. After her stepfather's suicide, her world turned upside down and unfortunately, still has not righted itself and probably never would because shortly after his father's death, Beast left them - left her - behind. Beast may have left them for the Marines but the imprint of his stay had always remained. In the last six years she had only seen him for a short stay during the summer, a little over four years ago when he was home after his first deployment in Afghanistan. He left her again, still with no real explanation. But now he's back - but not for her - never for her. He's only here for her mother who is dying of lung cancer. Hmm... Or is he? Tilly never realized just how much of him she's kept hidden away in her heart - until now. And it's slowly killing her. It's only a matter of time before her mother is no longer around to tell her what she's allowed to do and once she loses her, she will lose him - again. She always loses everyone she loves. How much pain can one person endure? But Beast is not the same young man she had once loved. He has dark, dangerous secrets, ones he refuses to reveal but what Beast doesn't realize is Tilly also has a dark, dangerous secret - one that could destroy everything and everyone. But who would have ever guessed that taking control of her life to achieve happiness would mean giving up the very thing she has long sought? Will Beast desert her - again? Can there ever be a happy-ever-after for Tilly? And what secrets are they keeping? I wonder???
After reading some of the reviews on this book, I would like to make a personal statement about the character, Tilly Beeston. I found her to intriguing, complex and extremely realistic. She is indeed a natural submissive as suggested by one of the characters in the book and by no means, is there anything wrong with having a meek, docile, dutiful or obedient personality, but at twenty two years old, Tilly has led a sheltered life and is still somewhat stunted in her emotional development as a result of a very controlling mother who has her own reasons for being so. But in the first half of the story, we do get occasional glimpses of her sometime rebellious spirit, need for independence and her desire for love and happiness. However, having said that, I would also like to say that in the last half of the book, we really begin to see a much deeper and proactive side of Tilly that is inching its way through the layers of control that have been imposed upon her. What is most surprising is Tilly's self discovery and eventual revelation - one that will indelibly change her life forever. You have no idea what awaits you in this book until well past the halfway point. As I stated earlier, it most assuredly enters like a kitten and exits like a lion! Tilly's journey of emotional growth, self-discovery and independence is absolutely magnificent!

Very Very Slow beginning leading to a predictable end...

I received ARC for review and felt bad that I disliked it. I really wanted to like it. It was extremely slow and the titular character had no dimension and held no interesting motivation until late in the book. The primary character 'Tilly', who was 'Beast's' step-sister, had no positive self-respect or self-image and did not seem to grow as a person during the telling of the story at all. She was a doormat at the beginning and still appeared to depend completely on others for her idea of self-worth as it ended. If you can hang on until 70% of the way through then you get to some semi-interesting but predictable story. The bedroom scenes were average at best; some were painfully paint by numbers but one or two were decent.
