From the Author
For over five years I worked in a women's prison. To say Liddy is based on any particular inmate would be a lie, however, her lively personality was crated from a wide variety of female criminals I've encountered. I hoped to create a brash, no-nonsense female hero that is as far from a "Marry Sue" as you can get and I think I succeeded. Liddy is wild, Liddy in profane, but one thing's for sure...she ain't boring.

About the Author
For most of his life, Clayton Callahan made his living principally in the "uniforms and guns" professions. Just out of high school in the 1980s he first served in the US Navy with an anti-terrorist unit. After 9/11 he enlisted in the US Army and is now an Iraq War veteran twice over. Between active-duty deployments, he's worked as a deputy sheriff, a correctional officer, and as a federal special agent for US Army Counterintelligence (lots of great stories there, can't tell any of them).

Crazy Liddy Tries to a Get It Done

Crazy Liddy is a romp through the galaxy. Tough gal Liddy gets caught for smuggling guns and put in the slammer, but the local governor needs a top notch star pilot to get a dangerous job done. She hauls Liddy out and dangles freedom in front of her nose if she will accept a dangerous mission to rescue her son from fearsome Azanti warriors, who are big, blue and very bad.

To complicate an already delicate mission, officer Reed, her arresting officer, must accompany her. While Liddy thinks fast on her feet and acts spontaneously, Officer Reed is a by-the-book- guy. The two make a contentious pair as they enter dangerous alien territory and plan to pluck out the governor's son.

A fun story for any who likes fast-paced scifi, wry humor, and a kick ass female protanganist.

Action and humor abounds

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I'd describe it as a space-opera - fast-paced, brimming with non-stop action and wry humor. The characters have distinctive voices that made me laugh aloud. The Adventures of Crazy Liddy is a spin-off of Callahan's first novel, Tales of the Screaming Eagle, where Liddy has a small role as Kilroy's girlfriend. It's not a sequel, so readers don't need to have read the first to enjoy this ride.

This story follows Liddy on her own crazy journey across the galaxy. She's a brassy, spunky main character with a big gun and strong survival instinct. She also has a penchant for smuggling that quickly lands her in prison on a distant planet. She has one chance at a pardon - the local governor needs a crack starpilot and Liddy's got the goods.

The governor's son, a young lieutenant, is missing in action in territory occupied by Azanti marauders, hulking blue warrior aliens with nasty personalities. Liddy's freedom depends on his rescue and she won't be going alone. Agent Reed, the by-the-book officer who initially arrested her, fills the role of partner and straight man. Nothing about this mission or unlikely pairing is easy, and Boy Scout Reed is only so much help. Used to relying on her wits and grit, Liddy is the only pilot skilled enough and crazy enough to pull it off.

The Adventures of Crazy Liddy is a quick, entertaining read with engaging characters. It’s a perfect book for light summer enjoyment and will appeal to any reader who loves a fun space adventure. Appropriate for YA and up.

this story doesn't disappoint, without being gratuitous or unrealistic

Another grand tale of space adventures in the 24th century, with a larger than life spaceship captain steering the story through the many twists and turns, bringing the reader along as captives to the storyline. Clayton Callahan's protagonist character keeps the story moving along in unexpected ways, as Crazy Liddy's penchant for smuggling draws her into a larger story of unfinished galactic warfare, embroiling her into the service of the very people who once wanted her in prison.

The characters are well developed, and their dialogue moves the storyline forward, while adding depth to the scenes as well as the characters. For those readers who appreciate the detail of 24th century armaments and battle scenes, this story doesn't disappoint, without being gratuitous or unrealistic. The author's grasp of military operations and police policy keep the story realistic and graphic. He goes to show that a scrappy, independent woman with steel nerves and a plan, can shape things in unexpected ways. The story also goes to show that happy endings are possible even in impossible situations. Kudos to Clayton Callahan another great read.

About the Author
Robert McCloskey (1914-2003) wrote and illustrated some of the most honored and enduring children's books ever published. He grew up in Hamilton, Ohio, and spent time in Boston, New York, and ultimately Maine, where he and his wife raised their two daughters. The first ever two-time Caldecott Medal winner, for Make Way for Ducklings and Time of Wonder, McCloskey was also awarded Caldecott Honors for Blueberries for Sal, One Morning in Maine, and Journey Cake, Ho! by Ruth Sawyer. He was declared a Living Legend by the Library of Congress in 2000. You can see some of his best-loved characters immortalized as statues in Boston's Public Garden and Lentil Park in Hamilton, Ohio.

Don't let the children in your life miss this book.

There is a reason this book is a classic. The pictures are detailed enough for a non reader to know what is going on and and the story is sweet. Sal and her mother go out blueberry picking. Sal wanders a bit and encounters a mother bear while Sal's mother encounters a bear cub. Both mothers quickly realize the sounds they hear while busy picking berries is not from their own offspring and they head off to find their child. Each is happily reunited. This story wouldn't be written today. The pace is slower than many of the current offerings. There is no irratating moralizing going on about staying close to your parent when out in nature etc. The This book always reminds me of a summer vacation day. When there is no schedule to keep or place to be but the simple task of enjoying a beautiful time outside.

Firstly i would like to start off by thanking Adam Jackson for introducing this book as it has helped me in so many ways.Reading this book has made me look at my life in a more positive manner and perspective.i enjoyed the way the book focused on individuals moments in life. it has made me realise that it is the self conscious that makes everyone feel unhappy about themselves and when learning how to control it makes you feel like a new person and make you achieve happiness in life.

Thirty-two years ago, British sailor Dougal Robertson published a first-hand account of his family's experience on a sailing voyage around the world. This was not however, a recounting of exotic ports and challenging passages. Rather, it described the horror of shipwreck and how six people in one tiny dinghy survived the perils of the open ocean for 38 days. Robertson's Survive the Savage Sea became a classic and ultimately Hollywood brought the story to the silver screen in 1992 with Robert Ulrich and Ali McGraw playing Robertson and his wife, Lyn. Still, Robertson believed there was more to share. Before his death in 1991, he asked his eldest son, Douglas, to make sure the family's saga would be told in its entirety. Enter Douglas Robertson's book. The Last Voyage of the Lucette. Incorporating most of his father's original text, Robertson expands the story scope. Drawing from newspaper articles, discussions with family members, Dougal's notes and his own recollections, he breathes life into every aspect of the Robertson clan journey physically or emotionally from their start in Falmouth England, to their eventual rescue by the Japanese ship Toka Maru roughly 300 miles west of Costa Rica. After struggling with farming for years, Dougal saw an around-the-world voyage as an unparalleled opportunity to educate his four children Douglas, Anne and twins Neil and Sandy and to make up for, as he put it, all those cold nights and empty dinner tables, the holidays they never had and the days when we sent them to school in shoes that didn't fit. The Robertson's planned their trip for two years. A 50-year old, 43- foot schooner named LUCETTE became the new family home, and they finally cast off the docklines on January 27, 1971. Part One is an exciting foray into the world of liveaboard cruising as the family sails across the Atlantic to the Windward Islands and the Bahamas, where teenage daughter Anne falls in love and decides not to continue the trip. The pages turn so quickly, it's effortless to follow along as this colorful family sails onward to Jamaica, the Panama Canal where they take on Welsh traveler Robin to fill Anne's empty place and the Galapagos. It all comes to a shocking abrupt halt in the morning hours of June 15, 1972, when Lucette is attacked by a pod of orcas. While all six ultimately reached the life raft safely, they are faced with a daunting situation. They are alone on the Pacific Ocean, five weeks from anyone knowing they are missing, well beyond the shipping lanes and they don't have nearly enough food or water. Part two is a day-by-day account of the shipwrecked family's time at sea. The Robertson's story is remarkable in that the group of six had to abandon their deflating life raft and survive aboard the tiny dinghy Ednamair during their 38-day odyssey. 'It is essentially Dougal's story,' his son notes. 'For his superhuman efforts in getting us all home in one piece, and for giving us those two short years aboard Lucette, I shall thank him every day of my life.' (Sailing)

About the Author
Douglas Robertson, eldest son of Linda and Dougal Robertson born 1954 and raised as a farmer's son before sailing with the family on the Lucette when he was 16. He went into the British Merchant Navy as a cadet, finally serving as Chief Officer. He left the sea in 1980 for a career in accountancy and lives with his family in London where he is also a qualified Tai Chi instructor.

Worth your time

This book is worth reading 5 times, because each time you will find something you missed the time before. If you think about your daily life, what irritates and frustrates you, what scares you, what worries you, and contrast it with what this family endured, your troubles will fade away. More importantly you will be inspired by the depths of human courage and tenacity. You will be amazed by the strength of the human body and mind. And for my fellow psychology buffs, you will be intrigued by the survival mentality that persevered and kept these people alive in these conditions.

Surviving the impossible

6 people with a leaky life raft and small dingy for 38 days surfing on their wits. Puts life in a different perspective and makes our own complaints about difficulties pale in comparison.
Just goes to show that you can make your own luck through sheer perserverance.
Would also recommend Survive the Savage Sea by Dougal Robertson.

About the Author
Fred S. Kleiner (Ph.D., Columbia University) is the author or co-author of the 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th editions of GARDNER'S ART THROUGH THE AGES: A GLOBAL HISTORY, as well as the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd editions of GARDNER'S ART THROUGH THE AGES: A CONCISE HISTORY, and more than 100 publications on Greek and Roman art and architecture, including A HISTORY OF ROMAN ART, also published by Cengage. He has taught the art history survey course for more than three decades, first at the University of Virginia and, since 1978, at Boston University, where he is currently professor of art history and archaeology. From 1985 to 1998, he was editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Archaeology. Long acclaimed for his inspiring lectures and dedication to students, Professor Kleiner won Boston University's Metcalf Award for Excellence in Teaching, as well as the College Prize for Undergraduate Advising in the Humanities in 2002, and he is a two-time winner of the Distinguished Teaching Prize in the College of Arts and Sciences Honors Program. In 2007, he was elected fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, and, in 2009, in recognition of lifetime achievement in publication and teaching, fellow of the Text and Academic Authors Association.

SHODDY IMAGES, for an art history textbook.

DO NOT BUY! This is an art history text, which for some would mean the images are arguably the most important part, and on this version they are absolute crap. Every image in this book is so contrasty you can't make out any of the subject matter in the mass of black the dark areas have become, and further, none of them are high enough quality to zoom your screen in on for a better look.
I've attached images of the painting used for the book's cover as it appears in the text, as an example of how dark and low resolution the images are.

I can't believe this is a textbook. No one can see anything the text describes in these terrible low resolution photographs. At these prices? And it's a requirement for the class. The publisher should be embarrassed.

I loved this book

I loved this book, It's great, and has so many of the chapters that I needed for my Art History Class. The only thing is that it's thick and it's quite heavy. But, other than that, it's exactly what I needed.
