One day, when Lisa turned 16, she came home to discover that her mother had swapped bedrooms with her. 'You're my girlfriend now', her step-father told her. Lisa turned to her mother for help, but was met with a shrug. She wouldn't hear a word against her husband. 'Don't blame me,' she said. Her step-father's abuse was horrific but what completely tore her apart was knowing her mother knew and encouraged it.

Trapped and increasingly desperate, Lisa tried to find a way out. But her isolation was complete. Several months later her mother told her she'd arranged for Lisa and her step-father to move into a flat together down the road. It was too much for Lisa to bear. 'Please don't make me, please,' she sobbed. But her mother just ignored her. Lisa was marched around to the flat with her possessions and her nightmare was complete.

Alone with her step-father, Lisa's life became even more unbearable. Then one day, finally, she got the chance she'd been looking for to escape. Lisa bravely struck out on her own, petrified her mother would find her and hand her back into the waiting arms of her step-father. But Lisa's mother had no idea how determined she was to break away…

Hard to read about such abuse

This book made me so mad, I wanted to find that mother and teach her a thing or two..I don't even have the words for this it is beyond words. One of the worst cases of physical and sexual abuse that I have ever come across. I was a good book in that the victim does come out strong but what it took to get her to that point is just so very, very bad. Shame on the family that let this take place and shame on the schools that never took notice. I am not even sure why I bought this book. it was that shocking..I would actually cry in some parts but like I said it was a "good" book just a very bad subject..God bless her

Couldn't put it down!

This story was heartbreaking, warm at times and eye opening. Wonderfully written, I could sense the love she had for her nanny. I felt angry, I cried and I smiled at the end. Amazing that she had the courage to write such a detailed account of her nonexistent childhood. Extremely sad and nauseating at times though..still, I highly recommend this book.

I hope you were able to feel better about yourself through your writing and use it as a aid in your healing process I always feel upset when I hear about people in situations like yours but I also feel happy that you were able to move on and live a happy life.I would greatly recommend this book it was an amazing experience!!

Past Perfect

One of several books written in anticipation of the millennium, "Mapping Time: The Calendar and Its History" by E. G. Richards suffers from an especially heavy burden of typographical errors. As can be seen on the author's own web page, the address of which also is incorrect, there are hundreds of errors, some of which affect the accuracy of the account. For example, on page 208, January 1 came to mark the beginning of the Roman civil year in 153 BC, not 158 BC, and was in response to the Second Celtiberian War in Spain. Rather than wait until the middle of March for consuls to assume office, the new year was moved to the first of January so the Roman commander could depart with his legions that much sooner. It is a pity that so many errors compromise an otherwise informative history. Until they can be corrected, a better introduction to the calendar is "The Oxford Companion to the Year."

Interesting but flawed

Very interesting history of the major calendar systems used around the world, both in the present day and in the past. It also gets into the mathematics of how to convert between calendar systems, including algorithms suitable for computer programming. Unfortunately, there are numerous typographical errors in the narrative and in the algorithms! The word "temperature" where the author clearly meant "temperate", substitution of "*" for "-" in a formula, etc. So far, I have been able to correct the formula for computing the day of the week and the formula for computing the date of Easter. I'm not looking forward to tackling the other algorithms. Did anyone proofread this before it was printed? Maybe the publisher could put up an errata sheet on their web site.
Good for the history, but be prepared to do some algebra if you want to use the algorithms.

Erudite But Fun

This is a nice examination of the different calendars and methods of mapping time that humans have employed over the centuries. On the surface it has the air of a dusty reference book, but inside the author is often witty and amusing as he covers the histories and backgrounds of different dating systems. I'm especially impressed by his inclusion of the different algorithms used to calculate dates, of Easter for example, which are marvelously complex. Most readers will never have occasion to use these algorithms, but its nice to know they're there. I also appreciated the charts and the glossary of the more obscure calendrical terms.

About the Author

Jie Jack Li earned his PhD in organic chemistry in 1995 at Indiana University. After a stint as a postdoctoral fellow MIT, he worked as a medicinal chemist at Pfizer and Bristol-Myers Squibb from 1997 to 2012. Since then he has been an associate professor of chemistry at the University of San Francisco teaching organic and medicinal chemistry. He has published 23 books ranging from organic and medicinal chemistry, to the history of drug discovery.
