Frustrating

As a fairly new transcriptionist working on a mainly surgical account, I need all the help I can get from my references, and I have found this book to be extremely frustrating. In the month that I have owned it, I have found TWO (yes, TWO) terms that I was looking for. The rest I have found by using other resources. Save your money.

I recently took on a transcription job at a surgery center. This book has helped me tremendously! The words are easy to find. I do not know how I would deal with some of the terminology if I did not have this book!

Beautiful stuff!

I'm making a quick edit on this review 13 years later. Photographs are very captivating. They are all from Brit pop magazines like The Face and BIG. Back in the day it was totally worth it to get the book and make it as part of your art collection. However some of the photographs are very a la mode and lack creativity or are obviously over photoshopped. There are a few novel compositions and themes though. I flip through it now and I guess I don't feel as excited as I did when I bought it in 2001, not because I already know what's in it, but nothing in it is particularly mind blowing considering how much graphics design and technology has progressed today.

Blurring the Lines Between Photography and Digital Manipulation

In "The Impossible Image," Mark Sanders explores the ways technology is changing fashion photography. He questions whether we should even consider digitally manipulated photographs to be photography. Even though the subject was shot with a camera, computer manipulation plays a large, if not a larger role, than the camera.
Take for example, Vincent Peters' images of the super model, Gisele. Placed in a glass box in the center of the frame, pedestrians stare at her through the glass. The catch is that the pedestrians were not present at the time of the photograph, but manipulated in a completely believable fashion into the photograph. On the other spectrum, Phil Poynter's "I Didn't Recognize You With Your Clothes On" portfolio is obviously manipulated. Relying on sexual connotation, the photographs depict clothing as if it were on a human, but in an empty frame. The body has been completely erased from the photograph leaving only an impression of reality.
What makes this book so fascinating is Sanders' understanding of the history of photography. For Sanders, photography has always been thought of as a `factual' visual system. We believe it to be a process that "never lies" because, the subject was physically in the same space as the camera at the time it was photographed. What Sanders examines is a collection of digitally manipulated images in different stages of this understanding. In the beginning of the book, he presents images that could easily be mistaken for what was actually in front of the camera at the time it was shot. Towards the end of book, there are more obviously computer manipulated images that are instantly recognizable as such to the viewer. Within this progression, our understanding of manipulation changes and the lines between photography and digital manipulation blur into questions about the role of photography in modern society.

About the Author
Born in India, Madhu Gadia is a registered dietitian and a certified diabetes educator. She received her Master of Science in Foods and Nutrition from the University of Illinois. She lives in Ames, Iowa, where she works as a clinical dietitian at an outpatient clinic. Madhu also teaches the art of Indian cooking and has appeared on local television, as well as local and national radio.

My dream cookbook!

Since I have Type 2 diabetes and have successfully reversed it by switching first to a lowfat vegetarian diet, and then to a lowfat vegan diet (with even better results), I was thrilled to find a vegan cookbook which highlights my absolute favorite cuisine, the cuisine of India. As I began to read, learn, and cook from the Indian Vegan Kitchen, I realized that I had finally found someone who could explain Indian cooking techniques, ingredients, and recipes in a way that made sense to me as an American. It is clear to me that Madhu Gadia understands the kind of necessary background information and instructions that an ordinary American like me needs in order to transform her own kitchen into a palace of Indian delights. I have made quite a few recipes from the Indian Vegan Kitchen, all with their own distinctive flavors, and all successfully delicious! So far I have made a Kidney Bean dish, Carrots and Turnips, Black-eyed Peas and Potatoes, Zucchini, and Black Gram and Bengal Gram Dahl. I follow her recipes exactly, but have adjusted the ingredients to meet my health needs. Namely, I have reduced the amount of oil and salt. I also reduced the amount of cayenne pepper, since we like spicy, but not really hot food. That said, the recipes themselves have resulted in some very healthy and enjoyable eating at my house, and I can't wait to try the rest of the recipes in this cookbook. Madhu Gadia has included very helpful information on Indian spices, as well as the dals (beans and pulses) used in Indian cooking. She explains the basic techniques of Indian cooking, too. AND she has a website, [...], from which she is able to answer any questions you might have about her recipes or about Indian cooking. Before this cookbook, my husband and I were dependent on Indian restaurants for good Indian cuisine, but now my own house smells as fragrant and enticing as an Indian restaurant! But I enjoy it even more than a restaurant, because I know that all the recipes are vegan. I have already recommended this cookbook to many of my friends, and would recommend it to anyone who loves Indian cooking. I look forward to trying her New Indian Home Cooking cookbook as well. Thank you, Madhia! This is a dream come true for me.

It fills an important niche but needs to be revised!

I am so grateful that this book exists since I loooove Indian food and cook vegan only. Some of the recipes are really delicious, particularly the three lentils dish. But, there are a lot of issues with recipes and you need to be careful in using them. Sometimes ingredients will be listed but then when you follow the steps they are never mentioned again. Other times the amount of water required or cooking time seems off. I get the feeling that no one actually tested the recipes out to make sure they work perfectly and include all the necessary details. It's frustrating, but I am still very happy to have the book since it does meet my needs and lets me have tons of Indian vegan recipes all in one book. Also, there's a lot of variety in terms of recipes and North and South Indian food, but I do wish there were more easy to cook "main dishes" or what the author labels daal.

I have always been on the fence about Indian food - sometimes I like it, sometimes I don't. But I do love how vegetarian-friendly the cuisine is, so I was thrilled to see an all vegan cookbook. I bought it to try to discover new ways to cook staples of mine (like lentils, cauliflower and other veggies) and I certainly did! I've been cooking soups in a new and much tastier way thanks to this book - simmering the beans and sauteeing the seasonings and vegetables in a separate pan, then stirring it in once the beans/lentils are done cooking. It's simple but revolutionary, and has brought a lot more flavor into my cooking. Also, the recipes are so straightforward and simple that I've had no problems substituting a lot of ingredients. I didn't buy all of the traditional spices she says to use, but the results were delicious with whatever I had on hand to throw in. The flatbreads are also great! I am not much of a baker and the onion flatbread is so easy and delicious! A must have for anyone wanting to expand their cooking repertoire and discover delicious new and very healthy flavors.

A great companion to anyone interested to get the most out of RabbitMQ

Ah, a cookbook! The perfect companion to get the most out of that brand new technology, mainly if paired with the official documentation, or some other great text (see below for suggestions). RabbitMQ, an implementation of the AMQP protocol and the de facto standard for building asynchronous distributed systems, has been there for quite some time already, but still many don’t take advantage of having a loosely coupled (asynchronously) distributed application. Among the very few titles available, which confirms how unknown this technology still is to the main public, RabbitMQ Cookbook is the perfect choice for anyone interested in getting the most out of the AMQP protocol, be it an administrator or a developer.

As typical of the books dedicated to RabbitMQ, the recipes are split into two categories, targeting in part administrators, but mostly developers. While it is possible to build applications on top of RabbitMQ through third party middlewares, such as Celery, the authors focus on those that get their hand dirty and deal directly with the broker, programatically.

While as just stated most of the text targets developers, the best of the book are those few chapters dedicated to administrators. Three chapters in particular, 6, 7 and 10, stand out for the impressive quality of their content and the great value given to the readers. In these recipes the authors focus on clustering and high availability. Many pages are dedicated to replication. I have particularly enjoyed the examples that clearly show to the reader, step by step, what happens when we properly create a cluster and queues get replicated. And what happens what we do it the wrong way!

Chapter 10 is fully dedicated to Rabbit and the cloud. More specifically, the authors focus on how to deploy it on Amazon AWS and get EC2 instances up and running, working in synergy, in a cluster, through a VPC.

Overall a very good book for anyone interested in working with RabbitMQ. Precious for developers, it is a little gem for administrators and DevOps managing auto-deploying clusters. Highly recommended.

A very Usefull book for all rabbitMq developers

I throughly enjoyed reading the book .
It is a very well written and nicely explained cookbook
It contains some very good recipes about rabbitmq and queuing.

first two chapters describes the working with Rabbitmq along with AMQP specification(0-9-1 and future release)
third chapter is all about Rabbitmq configurations and playing with rabbitmqctl and management plugin .

I love the recipes in fourth chapter about the integration of Rabbitmq with mobile platforms and some other technologies.
Its good to know stuff like MQTT and mosquito .

chapter 5 is all about web apps and here i feel authors could have put some more useful use cases .

Recipes for high availability and clustering are very well explaind

Overall its a very good book for a Rabbitmq user.

If I had to describe this book in one word it would be, for sure, useful.

This books provides different recipes from the most basic stuff like installing RabbitMQ to complex configurations such as High-Availability mirrored queues (and many more!). All the recipes are clear and straightforward which makes developer's life easier.

I recommend it to all RabbitMQ developers out there.

Long winded and seems like fiction

The author covers what she wanted to in the first 100 pages. After that it gets redundant with same story different guy. It is sad to see a woman so confused that she thinks she is "making love" to all these men when it is clearly meaningless sex. The stories seem a little over the top and I am not sure if San Diego has that many men craving a woman's treasure that they love to pleasure her but if so the author found everyone of them in the area. It is clear she has an addiction to sex and is longing for a close interpersonal and meaningful relationship that she tries to fill with sex. Hopefully the next book she attempts to write is how she straightened out her life through mental health counseling and abstinence. This book was nothing more than her sexual conquests put together and published.

I was able to read a sample of the book on line (up to chapter 7). I started to read it on my cell phone and couldn't put it down. I love it!!!! It is well written, liberating and entertaining. Looking forward to reading the whole book!!!

Buy this book!

This book had me from page one. I haven't finished yet, but I'm reading so much every day and even odered a paperback copy so I could have one to hold and possibly lend to friends. My other copy is on Kindle. Schahrzad has experiences that I wish I had and she describes them in erotic detail. I find this book very exciting and well written. I love strong, honest women and she fits that description. I would love to meet her one day, Ironically she has lived in Omaha, which is a place I lived for 6 months and visited often as a child, and went to school in a city only 20 minutes away from where I live now. This was all just coincidence, but I feel like it was fate.
I am adding to this after I've read the entire book. It's remarkable how good it was considering her friends just said "You should write a book" and didn't have a background as a writer. She's planning a second book, and I'm just as excited to read that. It's so refreshing to know that there are such unflinchingly honest people in this world. She shares her joys and sorrows. I want all my friends to enjoy this book. No fiction book could ever do it justice.

The Short Story Where Carlotta Carlyle Began

The unabridged audio recording of Luck Penny, narrated by Tavia Gilbert, was a delightful addition to my other Linda Barnes audiobooks. Linda Barnes wrote this story in 1985, starring her tall, red-haired, cab-driving detective Carlotta Carlyle and featuring Gloria on radio, two years before "A Trouble of Fools," her first Carlotta Carlyle novel. This is a short story, fitting easily onto a single CD, with most tracks 4 to 5 minutes long. Tavia Gilbert does a nice job, which is real praise, since I am such a huge fan of C.J. Critt, who narrates the other Linda Barnes books.

Very thorough, excellent reference

I used this text when I studied Roman Architecture and when I went to Rome. It is an excellent text and has good illustrations, although the pictures are occasionally blurry. I would recommend taking this with you if you would like to know just a little bit more about the ancient ruins you are looking at in Rome, even if it is heavy.

quality is really good, but I thik that for art studying the book should obtain pictures or at least html link for online pictures since it is e-book. There are some pcts in this e-book, but extremely small. This is the only disadvantage I discerned.

If roman architecture is your 'thing' then this is an ok book. I found it choppy in places and a very dry read. I only bought the book as a required textbook for class.
